I don't know, I've just used "An" before any abbreviation that pronounces as if it started with a vowel.

It depends on how you say it. It doesn't matter. I pronounce the letters, so I'd put "an".

Depends on the sentence structure.
I have an NES rom on my computer.
Do you own an NES console?
This old piece of '80s technology is called an NES.
Do you have an NES special edition Gameboy Advance SP?

If you say "N-E-S" (which you should) , it's "an". If you say something like "ness", then it's "a".

There is an "e" vowel sound when you sound out the letter "N", so you need an "an".

Yes, Tomboh is correct.

Same goes for Xbox, you wouldn't say 'A Xbox' because you say the X by its self.
