How will you unlock the hidden characters? *Spoilers*

Special Achievements: Like, beating Classic Mode, and complete this event, run this fast, etc... (Note: R.O.B. doesn't have a special achievement)/Get trophies, music, etc. at the same time.

Versus Matches: Complete a certain number of matches./Unlock stages at the same time.

Subspace Emissary: Join the character in the Subspace Emissary. Some of the characters, like Wolf, must be unlocked through away from the main game./Trophies, music, game modes..

So? I think I'll play through the Subspace Emissary first. Seems more rewarding.

vs matches. I have to do those anyway to get most of the stages, so I'll kill two birds with one stone. that way I don't feel rusehd while playing SSE

not true.  [spoiler]wolf, jigglypuff, and toon link[/spoiler] can all be unlocked in SSE, they're just bonus characters that you get if you revisit a level after completing the SSE.

For people that require VS, I'll just use the one stock trick. :P I'll go for acheivements if they are faster.

Chances are I will be done 450 vs. matches by the end of the first day (my friends and I are planning on a whole bunch of one on one matches to try the characters out), and from there I can simply spam the rest.

That's what I meant; they cannot be unlocked progressively. Any character can be unlocked through any means bar that peripheral.
