Something along those lines happened to me today.

I was playing a free-for-all match with 3 CPUs with Pokeballs and Assist Trophies on HIGH. Mew actually appeared mid-way through the match and dropped a CD while I was getting KOed. Of course I couldn't get to the CD in time because they go away so quickly.
