THEBIRD

The Kentucky Derby was last night, for those of you who watch it or bet. My friends and I always go to the Triple Crown races. For those of you who don't follow it, Big Brown won the Kentucky Derby. Eight Belles, the only girl horse competing, could have won if she hadn't broken both of her ankles and died. It was a sad sight, to see her just lying there after the match. They had to immediately put her down. She wouldn't have broken both of her front ankles if her jockey hadn't shifted his weight too much on one side on the final turn.

The death of Eight Belles did darken the fun in watching the race, but these things are bound to happen... It's a dangerous sport. And to make things worse, none of the horses my friends and I betted for won. The favorite never wins (Big Brown was the favorite), plus we didn't want to bet on a 3-1 odd, which would make us little money. All together, we voted for Z Fortune, Pyro, #13, Adriano, Denis of Cork, Big Truck, Gayego, Eight Belles and recaputuretheglory. And not a single one of them won ;;. But, like I said, if Eight Belles hadn't tragically died, she might of had a chance.

So, do any of you guys follow the Triple Crown races, or bet on a horse?

a least it's not as bad as dog racing, but not by much

For these kinds of horses, it is in their nature to run and compete ;). If we did not do it, they would be doing the same thing, just without our help if they broke a leg. At least with us we can stop the pain. In the wild, they'll be slowly eaten alive before finally dying. But I used to think the same thing, but as long as it is there, I still watched.

So is keeping an animal alive when it is in pain.
