I was watching my local News Station, Global Calgary, when something got my attention - gamers are more likely not to have social lives (olol), and become addicted to pot and booze! Wonderful!

So, thinking this was a joke, I searched the intertubes....and lo' and behold, GoNintendo had an article on it posted.

Quote from GN, also the news:

"* the more the students play video games, the worse their relationships are with friends and parents (although this effect is modest)
* those who play video games daily smoke pot twice as much as other players and three times more than those who never play
* young women who play often have lower self-esteem"

Isn't that wonderful?! You're a bunch of stoners. Now, go get high you degenerates. :|

Subverted, in my case.

Okay, that's 100% true.

That is BS.

Simply as that.

Yeah that doesn't seem very accurate at all. I mean there isn't any good way to prove that. It's just like the study that they said that video game addiction was a disorder; that was very quickly disproved and I'm sure the same thing will happen with this topic.
Will edit sig later...:P

Why would potheads play video games?
'Cause it's fun..?  Back when I was still a pothead, I absolutely loved playing Banjo-Kazooi and Super Mario RPG ALL the time.

I used to get baked with all my friends and we'd all play Mario Tennis on the 64.

FORNICATION BABY!

most kids these days play video games semi-regularly, actually.

the first would generally be true, I would say, however, my relationship with my friends (of which I have quite a few, but of course, that is diminishing with me going to Uni) is great, and my relationship with my parents is amazing.

The first didn't factor in this:
-that the majority of gamers are 18-26 year old males
-18-26 year old males generally are at university, or have moved out.
-having moved out means less contact with friends, family.

The second works more the other way.  Those who smoke pot are likely to play video games (as another form of release).  I know very VERY few people who smoke pot around here (and alot of people around here play vidja games), and it's really easy to get it.

Women (as I understand it) are social beings.  video games aren't generally social.  thus, less social contact = less self-esteem.  makes logical sense, but the same thing could be applied to studying, reading, or simply watching TV.  it's not isolated to video games.

1st year Psychology teaches you alot.

This seems to go with "people who do activity X have traits of Y"

for example, a post on 4chan a while ago, stated that he knew about all anons.  that most of the people had moved out/were going to move out to university and were between 18 and 25.  They got good grades without trying, knowing that they were mostly smarter than the people around them (no effort through high school, but generally high grades anyways).  They know girls, have girls as good friends, but generally do not make moves on them, fearing a loss of friendship.  Have a generally wide friend pool, quite a few friends, but not many close ones.

That matches the exact demographic and characteristics of the average internet 18-25 year old, and of course, it matched everyone that was on the site, simply because that's the kind of person that goes to 4chan.

If you know how a demographic works, it's easy to assign a bias to that demographic.  That's all this is.

Total and utter BULLSHIT.

Nearly everyone at my school plays videogames.  Everyone there (based on what I know) has some sort of social life, and a small precentage of them get stoned... ahem, regularly.  Usually if anyone gets stoned it's on alcohol at parties (which isn't surprising there).

I play games, have a social life, and don't do drugs.

Ha, ha.
meh

Doodle

It depends. People can have lives and still play games.
But smoking pot...I thought gamers were smarter than that. :P
