I hardly count Zelda or Metroid as gateways. The real gateways are Mario Kart, Virtual Console Releases, Pokemon, Smash Bros, etc. Metroid, Zelda, Golden Sun, Advance Wars, etc. are more hardcore. Wii, Mario, Brain Age, etc. are casual.

Making Zelda more of a gateway would be the ideal motion.

Mario used to be pretty hardcore. Look at Super Mario Sunshine. That game was far from easy.

That was more or less a gateway title. It took elements away and added new ones that would appeal to newer gamers.

Casual games are available to more people, but generally suck.  Hardcore games are fun, but generally not too available.  The Super Mario 3D series just has that ideal combination of availability and not sucking.

Zelda's always seemed to be more like a compromise between casual and hardcore in my eyes. In general, it's gameplay and controls are simple enough that a younger person could understand it, but it's puzzles and dungeons are difficult enough that they actually make you think (some dungeons more than others). At the moment, it seems that Nintendo is aiming to tip the scales towards the casual side.
