It starts off slowly, but it gets better. There are less random encounters the further you go on in the game. Enemies will run away from you. How far are you? Eventually your PK abilities can be your main weapon, and you can get teddy bears so your party doesn't get hurt first.

EarthBound really is worth playing, it's an incredibly fun game.
