I never heard of this, but apparently it's something that affects a small number of Wiis. It's connected with Brawl because that particular game has so much data on it, it's a dual layer disc. Apparently if the lens gets dirty, enough, the system will stop being able to read Brawl, then seems to lose confidence in itself and won't read any disc at all. Nintendo offers a Free repair kit/service, including free shipping to fix and clean the lens. Below is a quote I found about the problem.

QuoteSuper Smash Bros. Brawl utilises a double-layer disc which has a large memory capacity. A very small percentage of Wii consoles may have trouble consistently reading data off this large capacity disc if there is some contamination on the lens of the disc drive. Nintendo has specialised cleaning equipment that can resolve this problem. Please do NOT attempt to clean the lens yourself, as you may damage the system.

If you are experiencing disc read errors, please contact consumer Support or go directly to our Fast Track repair service and enter your information. There is no cost for the repair or shipping of your Wii to get the disc drive lens cleaned.

I've heard about it occasionally around the net, but I've never experienced it myself.  I've also heard of some problems with Mario Kart: Wii disks that prevented them from being read by the Wii.
