The complaint I'd give with that is that they're not playable in single-player.
If you want to complain about them being in the game, then go complain about Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic Adventue, Sonic Adventure 2, etc. as well.

And uh, where does it state anywhere that Tails is in the game? I see Knuckles, Blaze, and Shadow mentioned, but only in multiplayer.

It'll be like Secret Rings in that respect. Blaze, Shadow, and Knuckles are knights, with Shadow as Lancelot and Knuckles as Gawain. Amy will be the Lady of the Lake, and Tails will be the local blacksmith.
