Okay as a Ness Master myself I will give you some pointers...

PK Thunder - You need to learn the hand movement of this attack so perfectly that you can be looking at the other side of the stage and still hit yourself in the back with the attack.

PK Fire - Great attack, but whenever you use it use your bat directly after, it deals alot of damage most of the time.

Bat - The tip of the bat is the most powerful point so try and hit with that.

PK Flash - Only use this attack when your opponent has broken their shield or is sleeping, don't forget you can control where it goes!

Okay now onto combos...

If an enemy rolls behing you use the yoyo (either walk-the-dog or around-the-world) then roll behind them and use your bat, works very well on big characters like bowser.

as stated above PK Fire, Bat simple really.

Down Grab and Bat - Down grab makes ness burn them so just like PK Fire it works great with the bat.

Bair - Ness has a ridiculously strong bair so use it as soon as your opponent is in the air behind you.

those are a few things I hope I helped

ok let me actually give you 1 good tip, its all i have..

Once your opponent has taken a lot of damage, try to lure them to a ledge and grab them and throw them Backwards.

I also heard that you can knock back projectiles with his bat if timed correcly.

But any pointers on Advanced Techniques?

you can knock back projectiles with the bat but it isn't really that useful if you ask me...

Grim, as a "Ness Master", you forgot one very important technique with Ness. Double Jump cancel. A DJC is done by jumping twice(it's easier with X or Y) and then doing an air attack. If you do that combination as fast as you can, it's faster than short hopping. Combine the DJC with fast falling and L-canceling, you'll have freaking fast air attacks.

Also, when Grim says roll behind, you should wavedash, as you don't have lag from it.

I'm pretty good with Ness.  A good strategy but this is really cheap.  I don't use this move much.  Get the enemy into a wall so they are trapped and constantly use the bat for massive damage.  You can also mix this with PK fire.

Enter any term you don't get, and you are usually going to get an answer. If you don't, check smashboards in the general Melee discussion.

DJC sounds REALLY useful, but I REALLY need to learn how to combo up Short Hopping, Fast falling and L Cancling.

I tried SHFFLing today, but it was INSANELY hard!

If you are having trouble with the short-hop, DJCing is easier, because you can put as much pressure on it as you want, you just have to be fast.
And with your shffling, it is easier to first practice short-hopping, then L-Canceling, and then Fast Falling. It could be different with Ness (as Fox, Fast falling isn't quite as important as the other ones), but I still find that easier with any other character I try.

If you want some more tips, search on youtube "Advance how to play" and look for a video by Waka. There are three parts, and they are all very useful, and helped me a lot when I first started.
