Because Nintendo is a bunch of closet perverts
"I will flip in the air, open my cheeks, and take a crap on you"-Kid at school

Nintendo wanted something that people could recognize and remember worldwide, in any language. Also, the intuitive marketing technique of people saying "what the hell, Wii is such a dumb name" ... "wait what's a Wii" seems to have worked.
"With a heart of furious fancies, whereof I am commander, with a burning spear and a horse of air, to the wilderness I wander."

I think it means Wireless Internet Interactivity. I could be wrong though.

It was probably a marketing sheme by Nintendo. A name like "Wii" is sure to get some time on the news.

Geno

The Wii was named after what most people touch while they're on the internet channel.

Pokesamrus

REVOLUTION WAS A BETTER NAME.

Chives
