I think it's nothing more than a homage to the original Mario side-scroller.

If there is a classic Mario character (8 or 16-bit Mario or something), I don't think this update is related in any way.  If a level were to hint at an 8 or 16-bit character, I'd expect the level to remain 8 or 16-bit as well.

and if he was gonna be in, it would be pixleised.

I honestly doubt it.  An 8-bit Mario as a Brawl character just doesn't fly with me, for whatever reason.

there's no point in having "classic mario".  we already had our added wario rep for this round, and it's wario.

Stafy has better chances than Classic Mario.  He might not even end up as a trophy.
