Why are so many people against paying for online in games?

because we are cheap and would rather spend our cash upgrading our PC's and buying more games...duh.

Silverhawk79

Pretty sure it's because most people are too cheap to actually pay.

Cheap? Sir you offend me. The correct term is "Miser".

Because I can find plenty of games that I can play online for free and have just as much fun as if I was using a pay service.  The only difference between the two is I have to pay for one.  Additionally, I see no point in having to pay a monthly or yearly fee for a service I might only use rarely in a game.

Wolfpika

lol at the comics.

yeah seriously, why do we have to pay for that? nintendo has so much money and their worried about doing more channels...GET A SUPER COMPUTER NERD AND LET HIM TO THE DIRTY WORK FOR YOU! AND LET US HAVE FUN WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT! jeez, if they do this to brawl, oh man i would like to legally sue them.

If there are no dedicated servers and it's all just peer-to-peer, why should I pay for online?  User names, voice chat (or at least text chat), demos, and friend lists have been pretty much standard on PC games for a long time.  What's the point of paying for what should be basic features for online implementation anyway?  Nintendo may have gimped such features, but that doesn't excuse MS from ripping you off.

I will ask this: what do you think Xbox Live is worth paying for?  Is it worth the cost because it allows you to connect to other people across the internet to play games?  Don't you already pay for internet service to do exactly that?  Didn't you already pay for the system that has the capability to connect to the internet built in?  And didn't you already pay for the games that have networking code already programmed?  Or do you think that Xbox Live is worth paying for just to have a user name and keep track of poop?  LOL.

Wow....that's a really good point. The service should be free. After all, all of valves games have free online, Sony (Who has the smallest wallet as of now) has free online, and even the DS and PSP have free online! Why should we even have to suggest pay-for-play?!

That's me. :D ^

Because what you get for free with Nintendo and what you get for free with Valve are completely different things?

Remember, Nintendo only does things for money ever since 2005.

X-box live is worth paying for because it's a good darn online system.

if nintendo would make something that equals that, or even comes near it, hell yes I'd pay for online.  but they won't, because they're Nintendo, and they continue to live in the past, even though they claim to be trying to revolutionize the industry.

Good point, but it's probably just due to hte system per system thing (i.e., make a freind in Halo, you don't have to try and find them again in Gears of War), and the like. Which is probably where all the complications arise. Still, it's a little expensive, but until it's not hte best online system for games, then it's at least worth paying for.
Nintendo has no right to charge anything since they have the worst online, like, ever. Hell, the PS2 has better online, and it's nine years old already!

because:

1. you can play people across the world.
2. leaderboards, meaning that you'll always be playing people around your skill level.
3. voice chat
4. downloadable content
5. an account system
6. small amounts of lag.
7. competitiveness
8. good games with good online
9. better than the competition has to offer.
10. you can always find a game to play, no matter what time of the day.
11. customizable gametypes
12. easy to block people you don't like
13. easy to add people that you do
14. easy to set up a match and get going quickly

I don't know about the PS3's online system, because I've frankly never used it.  Yes, I know that PC online capabilities in general destroy Xbox Live, and that it IS overpriced, but at the same time, it kicks the wii's online system to the ground, impales it through the throat, and runs it's head over with a lawnmower.

because:

1. you can play people across the world.Ok, I can do that with any online.
2. leaderboards, meaning that you'll always be playing people around your skill level.I don't give a crap, I just wanna play online.
3. voice chatI can do that with most other services for free.
4. downloadable content Most other services allow downloadable content for free. Plus, most expansions cost. For example, the tracks for GH and RB. The extended gameplay for some games, new levels.
5. an account system Isn't that included with the freaking console?
6. small amounts of lag. That has absolutely nothing to do with the service.
7. competitiveness Ok...I don't even have to try on this one. Blatant obviousness.
8. good games with good online That is biased. That can be on any system anywhere.
9. better than the competition has to offer. Opinion. Your reliability is almost gone.
10. you can always find a game to play, no matter what time of the day. K, but only if there are people playing that game.
11. customizable gametypes That's included in just about any online game nowadays.
12. easy to block people you don't like Included in most other services. FOR FREE.
13. easy to add people that you do Refer to comment above.
14. easy to set up a match and get going quickly Once again, it depends on the game and the user.

Reply to the bottom comment in bold: Even if the Wii's online does suck, it still lets me do what online gaming is all about. PLAY OTHER PEOPLE FOR FREE. No cost, no strings, no blatant ripoffs.

And besides, that wasn't even what I was talking about. >_>

I'm not "against" it personally.. you can pay if you want.. but I'd rather get the service for free than pay for it because it's dang good.  I'd rather have a good service for free than a good service I'm paying for.  I dunno, but I like keeping my money when I don't have to spend it.. that's just how I feel..

I also don't like how I bought a $450 console and it doesn't even have built-in wi-fi.  It's has all this hard-drive yet nothing I can download onto it!  I have to go out of my way to purchase an external device for $100 more and then pay ANOTHER $50 to even do anything online once I'm connected.. and then I can spend MORE money on stuff that wasn't included in game. ~_~

I dunno, I'd rather not spend that much money when I'm not going to play games online 24/7..

Anyways, there used to be a time when games were cool and fun without online play.. and not it seems like those games are in the minority... :(

I think my PS3 is great though.. I turn it on, connect to my network, and I'm online downloading demos, trailers, and more.. all for free.  I personally think that's better than paying...
