oh... uhh

well, curling is like

there's a long strip of ice.  each team gets 8 rocks.

at one end of the ice are the curlers' rocks and the bracket from which you push off from.  more on that later.  A bit further ahead is a circle with three rings around it.

go further down the ice and you get to a line.  this line is really close to the bracket.


now if you go to the other end of the ice, the pattern is exactly the same.  this is to conserve energy so that once you finish one "End" (a round) you don't have to lug the rocks back to the other end of the ice (because they're darn heavy and can cause major damage to something if they hit it).

So the point of the game is to push off of the bracket with your foot, with the rock in hand, and get as close to the "Button" (the circle) as possible.  you have to release the rock before you hit the first line, and it has to stop somewhere after the second line.  if it goes completely past the circles, it's also past the end line, which means that it's out of play.

but if you just keep trying to put rocks on the button, you won't win, because your opponent will be hitting your rocks with their rocks to get closer than you.  so it's necessary to set up guard rocks, which go between where the line is and where the circles begin.


it's called curling because if you turn your hand when releasing the rock, the rock will curl around things, namely other peoples' rocks. nobody ever throws a straight rock, because that's just stupid.  it always has a curl on it, because strangely enough, that's needed to keep the rock going straight.

also, there's pebble on the ice so that the rocks can grip.


on each team there are four members, a skip, a first, a second, and a third.  they throw in order of first to third, then skip, but the skip can choose to throw whenever they want.

when the first is throwing, both the second & third are sweeping (or not).

they sweep with "brooms", but they're not really brooms.  they're just like... I dunno what they're made of. o_O

the purpose of sweeping is to keep the rock going straight.  however, if you don't want this, you don't sweep.  I like not having to sweep, because it's alot of work.

the skip marks where they want the rock.

when the skip is throwing, the third marks where they want the rock, which is usually where the skip wants the rock.


To score, you have to be closest to the button at the end of an End (8 rocks for each team).  The team with the rocks closest gets points, but this is not always a good thing (will explain later).  Let's say the first team has the closest rock.  they get one point.  if they have another one that's closer than the second team's closest rock, they get two points instead of one.  however, if the second team's rock is the second closest rock, they only get one point.

"The Hammer" is the term for having the last throw on a given end, and is a big advantage to have.  you can clean the house (the circle & it's rings) with a properly placed shot, meaning that you have an opportunity to get more points than normal.  usually this isn't worth giving up for 1 measly point.

oh, people slide along the ice using "sliders", which are basically really slippery shoes that only really work on ice.
