The game was made with items, so you should use items every now and then.
"There's no skill when items are used" - You do need some skill in order to catch items and dodge and aim to help kill, you do need some skill to win with items.

Smash Ball =/= Skill.

Items are fun, but the game was also made with the option to turn items off.
I prefer items off, but with friends I play with them on.

Its preference, and when you are the only one to go against the grain, so be it.  :D

Something about "the luck factor"

Thing is, the only LUCK is where they appear, with some exceptions. Other than that, yeah, it's all skill.

True, but it does take some skill in order to hit them sometimes (especially with Donkey K) but usually when I just turn smash balls on, they didn't appear as fast >.> they appeared 2 times faster than normal.

I play with all items.  It actually takes more skill, since if your opponent gets a Bob-omb, Golden Hammer, or Smash Ball, you need to be very good in order to knock it out of them or dodge them.

It also takes some strategy (like the right area to use Luigi's FS so the opponent is cornered) and skill to manuver (like Diddy's, for example).  Like Smash Bro 25 said, it takes luck to get some items, but skill to use them right to defend.  Anyone can get a bumper or a smart bomb, but you need strategy to know the best places to throw them.

Strategy that some of use don;t really like in our games.
It all comes down to opinion really.

Play with or without items, who cares?
But if someone doesn't want to join your room because of it, tough luck.  ;)

Items are fun, I didn't imply otherwise, but some people prefer other styles.

I get kicked off each time I play anyway.

Oh, and to the Subject question:  People hate items because some people just like to see how good they are with pure brawn, no outside sources of help (like that Final Destination video :P).

Java

I love playing both ways.

I usually play with items in regular brawls, but I usually play with no items on Wi-Fi (I feel more accomplished when I beat someone)

StarWindWizard7

Well, for me personally, I prefer No Items.
To me they just get in the way.

Either way however, I don't really care... it just kind of bothers me when people say,
"oh you won because (insert item here) helped you" etc etc...

Sometimes, when I pick up an item like a pokeball, I throw it off stage cause I don't want any help.
If I want to KO somebody I want to do it by my own effort..with out any items to help.
Thats how I feel.
Knowing that I KO'd you by my own skill and my skill alone means more of a Victory KO then me grabbing
all 3 pieces of Dragoon or a hammer etc to help me win.

Items are there to help people Win (and even lose).
*shakes head*
I don't like it.
But thats just me.

If items are on, I will be a greedy son of a *bleep* and use every item to my advantage if need be.

Jono2

Ehh, I like certain items, but I only ever throw them.

there are some items that are just cheap, and that I've always hated.  I was classically a Yoshi main, so projectile weapons meant that I had to sit there and take it (no shield jumping).  Another reason why I dumped Yoshi.

the cracker launcher is incredibly cheap, as is the ray gun and the super scope.  I don't play characters that have reflectors (just can't get used to using them) so I have no way to counter.

Also, exploding capsules.  No, you can't turn them off this time around, and I don't know why.  Items appear randomly and they screw you over.  simple as that.  Either that, or they give you an unfair advantage with which you win, and you only win because of that.

Also, dragoon pieces (though dedede can spawn them himself).

It takes no skill to grab a hammer.  yes, there's the risk/reward factor, yes, there's the "whoever gets there first" factor, but at the same time, if you get there first, you get at least one KO, which is incredibly cheap.

I like my smash to be more skill-based than luck-based, and so does my brother, which is why we play with items off.

There is a certain level of skill involved, yes, but you are ignoring facts.

What happens when the Smash Ball spawns just as you were blasted upwards, not yet KO'd, but on your way? What happens when you are in the middle of a salvo of tilts, and a bob omb spawns in front of you? What happens when you throw the Pokeball, Goldeen comes out, but your opponent gets the next one (which spawned right next to them) and out comes Lugia?

Items are random, they can make the game even more hectic, which CAN BE more fun, but I feel they are also unfair. I will play with em on from time to time, but nothing more than for a sense of randomness.

Kilroy

I don't hate items, they're hysterical. They make Super Smash Bros. what it was meant to be. A party game.

Also, with my friends, it's common courtesy to throw off things like Hotheads or home-run bats. And if we do play with items on, we turn healing items off :P

Because half the items are either worthless (beamsword, sparky)
And half of them are too overpowered (starrod, Pokeballs, AT's)
I'm fine with smash balls since it isn't a "who gets there first" thing, and it reqires some skill to actually use (some more than others, *coughSuperSoniccheapashellcough*)

Super Sonic isn't cheap. I already found a way to dodge it, and it's easy as heck!

LOL, if anything, Kirby's is cheap. It's pretty hard to dodge, especially MY kirby. >:D
