It was never really worked on with a real budget and team in the first place, so technically it wasn't "canceled" per se.  It just never got the green light.

Wi-Fi would've been great? Probably, but I guarantee the DS wouldn't be able to handle the crazy online modes. Just look at Metroid Prime Hunters and you'll know what I mean.

Actually it was a Bungie game which had a contract with Microsoft but the contract ended so Bungie is free to make Halo on any console they want now.
