If you were around, why didn't you try and threaten to hurt him and hand the stuff over.  After all, it'd only be considered self-defense, and you'd be off the hook, and he'd get arrested for attempted burglary charges.

Someone who's smaret enough would cut the power, phone, and internet and render just about any security system useless.  Plus, not all people are deterred by them.  So therefore, the best thing to do is to have a self-defense weapon.
