As the amazing Jake told you, Windows 7 Release Candidate 1 is available to the public. Lots of people were surprised to learn that RC1 is legit until June 1, 2010. It's important to note that a few months before it expires, this install of Windows 7 will become annoying as hell. Microsoft noted:

"Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you'll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You'll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use. "

Certainly some people be in a huff about this, but what did you expect? You're getting a fairly stable of Windows 7 for free and it doesn't expire until June 2010. Microsoft didn't release RC1 to the public out of altruism; the company wants people to upgrade to Windows 7 or buy PCs loaded with Windows 7. Personally, I think it's a pretty funny control -- auto-shutdown every two hours? That's hilarious! I'm also sure that some enterprising hacker will find a way around it.

Why you do this?

Nayrman

That's inherently stupid, but it's Microsoft so what do you expect?
And yes, some hacker will have that problem solved in a matter of days... no problem...

Silverhawk79

Kind of like how in Windows 7 Starter Edition, you can only have a max of 3 apps open at once.

Somebody will find a way around it.
But it's a good thing to use. It'll make people want to get the full version, if they liked it until the 2 hour shut downs.
YEAH

Microsoft is sure making it easy for the bad guys.

Eh. I'd look forward to Windows 7, but I'd no longer have hardware acceleration for sound, which sounds a lot better than the software-rendered stuff. :( Even if they do have Creative ALchemy for 7, chances are that their darned headset drivers won't work. :\

Wait, So Vista is already out dated?

Wait, So Vista is already out dated?
Well......no, not quite yet.

I assume that 7 will be out in 2010

HTA!

I'm probably getting Windows 7 early...
Connections.

However, I've had XP for my entire computer going life...
Will be hard to move off of it.

There is no such thing as up to date in the computer world.
