Because when you're speaking of only one thing by itself, it's singular.
So an s is unnecessary.

When you speak of multiple subjects it's plural.
Meaning you are required to add an s to signify that you are speaking of more than one person/object.

Zero is neither singular nor plural logically. But english treats zero as a plural because the grammar gives only two choices, and the word zero is not the word one.

The same could be said for the words are and is.

"He is going to the store." (Speaking of 1 person = Is)
"They are going to the store." (Speaking of more than 1 person = Are)
"None of them are going to the store." (Speaking of no people = Are)

See what I did there?

because that is a shortened way of saying "not one person is going to the store" and its one person we are talking about, but then the "not" just makes it the opposite.
