Eventually, the hot gasses will build up inside the crevice and the spout ("Old Faithful") will not be able to spew enough out causing a HUGE erruption of hot gas and lava and junk and since it's been compressed for so many years, just imagine a Boomer with a bajillion nukes inside of it, just poke it and KA-BOOM!!!!!!!!111!!!

No, that's actually sort of accurate.  Basically, Yellowstone is a gigantic volcano that vents a lot so it doesn't erupt, but it slowly builds up over time and once every 10,000 years or so it has a decimating eruption.  Guess how long it's been since the last one :B
