I bought a video card yesterday because my computer was running off onboard video, and playing games was a chore at best and a nightmare at worst.

After a great amount of messing around with it, me and my dad finally got it working. The monitor would say that it was not connected to an outlet when we connected it to the video card. After we'd got it working, I restarted the computer. At first the monitor said the same thing, but then when it finally sensed a connection, the screen just displayed itself as the left half black and the right half purple. And I don't mean that everything was tinted darker and tinted purple, the colors were solid. After a few seconds of this the computer started functioning normally.

However, this morning I turned it on, and the purple and black screen stayed there and the computer didn't work. Might anyone know how to fix this?

Install the drivers for it.

I did that, and it worked the first time.

One of the problems it had was that, it was still reading the monitor port in the back of the computer as the main display, and treated the actual monitor, which was plugged into the video card, as a second screen. My dad set the one plugged into the card for the main display and disabled the secondary one which we weren't even using anyway. It worked after that, although it still did the purple-black screen thing for a few seconds. This morning it just didn't go away.

Well, whatever I did worked. My computer's on now.

I guess it just decides when to hate me and when not to.

If it was shipped to you and you put it in while it was cold that could have intercourse ed up your card. The PSU could be not efficient enough for the card(this would be my case, every now and then the colors get intercourse ed up and a BSoD sometimes). A broken cable is also always a possibility....
