Honestly, it's meant to be a multiplayer game, like Left 4 Dead is. Left 4 Dead is boring alone.

Then maybe they should have done a better job letting people play together. Split-screen co-op is only two players (though for legitimate processing reasons, not the bullcrap Activision pulls on Call of Duty), but you can't bring a guest online, and you can only do one person per console on LAN. And that's NOT because the console couldn't handle it, it's because, according to the creators themselves, they added split-screen as an afterthought and were too far into the development process to add it to online and LAN (which is why Borderlands 2 will actually have 2 players per console on online and LAN, though the host console still must play alone).

It's tragic to me, a person with real life friends who like to play games, that so few good co-op games are four player splitscreen these days.

Setting things up was not a pain for me. I have many friends I play with on Xbox Live. It's not always feasible to have friends come over just for splitscreen. Even when friends are over, they usually just jump on my spare Xbox and online it up. Not saying splitscreen sucks, it's just that I avoid the problem by setting things up in the most functional and comfortable way.
