The love plot was the whole point of the movie. How was it out of character? It was perfect.

The ending rocked.

Doc just never struck me as a character who would fall in love. And doc staying in the west for 10 years rather than going back with Marty felt like an awkward way to end the trilogy. And doc as a dad? No way.
Doc didn't choose to stay. The DeLorean left before he and Clara could get back to it.

What I mean is they should've had doc go back with Marty.
Doc ended up traveling back to 1985 anyways...

I don't know, the ending just felt odd. The love plot just killed it for me. Doc was very out of character during the movie.
No, they developed his character. Before he was just work work work, and through the 3rd movie, they gave him character development. And it progressed throughout the movie, not just an instant thing.

Character development.

The whole appeal of doc for me was that he was a crazy guy that never stopped working. He wasn't as crazy in the third movie as he was in the first and second.
When did he ever stop working in BTTF3? Never.

He wasn't such a mad scientist in the third. Personally I think they should've written a better story.
The only problem in the story IMO is Doc waiting 7 months to write a letter.
A lot of stuff went on in those 7 months. Maybe he had no time.
