Title: The Smash Canceling Experiment Trials!
Post by: Shujinco2 on December 21, 2007, 03:45:44 PM
Well, I got this idea while I was talking to Dawei. I asked him if there is a way to Smash Cancel, and he said no. BUT, he also said it would be the motherload of moves for mind games, so that's why I'm going to try finding out (If I can) how to smash cancel!

If some people would help me out with this, I'd appreciate it VERY much. As I can't play Melee for another 2 or 3 weeks, this can't be done with me alone!

Well, I'm going to start this out slow. This is most likely not going to work, but I have to do EVERY possibility before I can consider this real or not, so I'm starting with this!

BTW, Dawei and other great smashers, I KNOW THIS MAY NOT WORK, but Dawei said so himself, it would be the MOTHERLODE of all mind game techniques, so that's why I'm trying anyway.

Here goes nothing!

Smash Canceling Experiment Trial 1:

Basically, Use Fox's or Gannondorf's (Or any other character's who Up+Smash lifts them in the air.) UP+A smash attack, but try Air dodging while doing it.

Results:
     Failed with all characters.

Notes: Apparently, Up Smashing and leaving the ground doesn't count as a jump. :-\

Smash Canceling Experiment Trial 2:

While using a Kirby Smash Attack, simply use Kirby's Down+B move.

Results:
     Up+A smash:
     Down+A smash:
     Forward+A smash:
     Back+A smash:

Notes: If sucessful, stone would cause too much lag.

Smash Canceling Experiment Trial 3:

Grab a ledge or go off a platform while doing your Smash Attack. Probably done best with Link's Forward Smash.

Results:
     Failure.

Notes: Can only be done with smash attacks that move the character.

This sounds intriguing. I do believe I will help in this.

YAYZ!

Now, since Dawei is pretty good, I'm PRETTY sure he has a copy of Melee, so I hope he can help out too! ;D

Results: Failed
Notes: I used Falco, whose Up Smash is basically the same as Fox's Up Smash. It didn't work, even with my most perfect timing. It may differ between characters however, because I was too lazy to try them all.

ALRIGHT! 1 step closer to finding the truth!

Now, try other characters.

Well, whoever does it. DSoesn't matter.

I just wish I had a freaking wii! :( Then I could finally start playing Melee again, and experiment around a bit. :(

The kirby thing wouldn't work that great anyway because of the lag from it afterwards.

Anyway, I would help, but my friend and I are having some intense C. Falcon vs. Fox matches, and I doubt he would be willing to. Maybe tomorrow.

Well, I'll add you anyway. ;)

Hmm, since the Up smash theory failed, what should I try next?

*Thinks*

We should see what happens if you happen to grab a ledge while doing your Smash Attack!

Fox and Link are the only ones I can think of that has a moving Forward Smash attack.

But I might not be using Fox in Brawl ;)

Anyway, the thing is, smash canceling would be a mind game thing if you could cancel it in the middle of your charge, or middle of your smash. There are already ways to cancel moves (edge canceling, for example), but it's not super awesome important because you have to be in a certain situation.

Shujinco, if you keep spelling words wrong like that, download Firefox. The spell check is very useful, and eventually the words will be engraved into your mind.

Hmm... I was looking at this, and I'm kind of skeptical.  I think that any simple cancels (like air dodging out of an Up smash) would have been discovered already, given the time that the game has been out and the amount of time players have spent playing the game.  And it would take forever to try all of the different possibilities.

I think it'd work better if you just tried pressing random buttons.  That's how most glitches are discovered, by accident.  It would still take a while, but it might achieve better results.

Jigglypuff has one as well and I tried all three of them, it appears that if you smash attack of an edge you stop at the end off the ledge like their is an invisible barrier. Something odd is that when I tried with fox and link they just stopped at the edge but when I tried with jiggs she did the animation where she is about to fall off the edge (you know waving her arms and stuff).

I'll test if you are willing
YAY! You can try out that third one on there.

Fox and Link are the only ones I can think of that has a moving Forward Smash attack.

Now see what happens when you GRAB a ledge while doing it.

Like I said, you can't grab the ledge their is an invisible barrier that prevents you from going off the side of the level when you do a smash attack.

Oh, I get what you mean now, I thought you meant that if you Smash Attack off an edge does it cancel the smash attack, you mean that if you do a smash attack onto a ledge does it cancel it right?

I think it was because while you are doing the smash animation, their is no piece of code that says "When object Fox_Forward_Smash collision with object Edge_of_platform change object Fox_Forward_Smash into object Fox_Hanging_onto_ledge" or something like that
