I was asleep when it happened, but it was a 5.2 on the Richter scale and there was an aftershock about an hour ago.
When was the last time an earthquake occurred in your area?
Ummm, probably a long time ago (New York).
Never Newjersey :)
Wisconsin.
I'd be PRETTY DANG SCARED if we got an earthquake up here in WISCONSIN!

We are pretty far inland, but we are one of the only places where you can get an earthquake this far from the sea because we have two massive faults.
a long time ago, and you can check here

There was one up near Daytona Beach about 20 years ago, but that's it.

Yeah I found out today. I didn't feel it though.
Does being underground affect whether you feel them or not?

The epicenter was in east Illinois and it still damaged buildings in downtown St. Louis.
Besides, we have the New Madrid Fault. ^_________^
I don't think there's been an Earthquake near me since I've been born.
Apparently, though, there was an Earthquake along the New Madrid Fault this morning. Apparently, it wasn't that big of an Earthquake

There is a GINORMOUS fault line around I think 150-200 miles away from where I live.
I live in Houston, Tx, no risk there...
Except tornadoes, ans hurricanes...
I'm in a place where I'm safe from almost any natural disaster. Tornadoes blow west, which is where I am, but tornadoes would have to pass over mountains.
I don't live on the coast, so little hurricane threat, and I haven't heard of one earthquake in my state in the 10 years I've been here.

You could still get hit by a tropical storm.
True, but most of the things we get are remnants of hurricanes, which are very watered down once they reach us.

Since Long Island is basically sediment, I'd imagine that would act as a kind of natural shock absorber.

Hurricanes rarely go that far North unless they have already hit the coast and by then they would have lost a lot of force.
