Title: I got a laptop.
Post by: Silverhawk79 on May 20, 2008, 04:51:52 AM
For a graduation present, my grandpa got me a pretty sweet laptop. It's an HP Pavilion dv6853cl, and it's got 4GB RAM, a 320GB HDD, Vista 64-bit, and 384MB shared (oh god) video memory. It's also got a media center remote, 15.4" HD widescreen, and other stuff. Oh, and a kickass finish.

Cost nearly $1000, even with a $100 off coupon.

Screen size sucks, processor sucks, video memory sucks, and it's a laptop.

Congrats on that gross waste of money.

I'm getting a new laptop. Not as much memory, but the graphics card is pretty good:

Dell Vostro 1500
Intel Core 2 Duo T5470, 1.6GHz, 800Mhz FSB, 2M L2 Cache
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

2GB RAM
120GB HDD

Suppose to be working with WoW and PS CS3 and not much else...

Cost me $744.

I have one like that too.

it's from august 2007 so it's outdated garbage, amirite rio

Also, that is a pretty large screen for a laptop and seeing one that has widescreen is rare.

People that do buy pre-built deserve a slap in the face, they all suck, but for a laptop its not bad.

XP won't recognize 4 GB of ram.

No 32Bit OS can reconize past 4GB of RAM. XP 64 Can as far as I know.

The only complaint I have with Vista would be.... wall, was, the totally different layout of the GUI.

Once you use it for 2 hours a day, its like a Translucent version of XP >>

I have loads of programs on mines, and the only one I know that gives me problems is my USB Access Point, because the Driver I had to modify isn't very stable.

The OS depends on the user, not on how many programs you have installed.
If it crashed, you probably caused it.
I have XP and it never crashes on me.

too many programs can affect it also, and if I'm abusing Windows it just makes me want to use it less if it can't handle such simple things.

You'd need to do it intenionally then, Not even the advanced user would have that many programs on a computer to make it run slower.

Well I'm not doing it on purpose, I'm not the only one with these issues, if you look around on any of the Linux's forums that people have similar problems, and there is a specific topic in the Ubuntu forums that I noticed many of the same problems, the topic had to do with why people left Windows...but if you don't have enough to make Windows unstable then fine use it, but When I use Linux, i have almost no problems, and if there is one I can actually fix it because I can get "inside" and repair the problem.

guess what

Your computer sucks or you suck at using it. I have a poopty Dell laptop and yet Firefox and Pidgin work beautifully. Turns off randomly? Haha. Never had that happen with any version of Windows. I only needed a driver for my printer. Everything else I use is plug-n-play or whatever. No drivers needed.

I'm not the biggest fan of Windows either, but I know how to stop myself from exaggerating how bad it is. It's not as unstable as you seem to think it is.

Overall, my want for a nice Macbook still overweighs my liking for this current poopty laptop, so I'll most likely be buying a Macbook before the next college semester.

Explorer will crash all the time, Mozilla and Pidgin both don't work well in Windows, it has issues connecting to the internet, it takes FOREVER to do anything(or compared to Linux Forever), login takes like 5 min, turns off randomly(usually when I'm sleeping or at school), is open to annoying viruses/ad-ware, its not open to be modified if there is a problem, it needs retarded drivers to notice something in USB, and the most annoying thing about it, it thinks it knows better than I do.....like WHAT FUCKING HARD DRIVE TO FORMAT!!!!!!! wth are your standards

I'm used to my 16:10 1440x900 monitor.

My standards are thus: I consider good machines ones that would be acceptable for gaming. I dabble in video editing and music making, but most of my concern when creating or adding parts to my PC is gaming.

Chances are, you had a virus and were too stupid to do anything about. I've been using Windows since I was 8. I've never had any of those problems that weren't self-inflicted from me dicking around with the files.

suppose I was a fanboy, doesn't change what Windows does, like formatting both hard drives since it thought it had to put a boot loader in place of Linux and all of my data. I do have a topic of what happened in detail.

1. You are obviously a fanboy.

2. Windows doesn't format a hard drive unless you don't know what you're doing. (Such as installing a second operating system on a Windows computer)

3. If you knew what you were doing, you would've known that there was a good chance that installing linux could delete your data. EDIT: As Silver said, OPSHIONS.

Using avast was your first mistake.
Also, you're still trying to deny that whatever happened was your fault. If Windows reformatted both drives, chances are you misread something and chose the wrong option.

no, I know why it happened, but I didn't expect it to happen...

When I was installing windows I told it to Format the one hard drive. With Windows being Windows it had to have a boot loader on the other HDD, but because it couldn't read the other HDD so it went and formatted it.

suppose I was a fanboy, doesn't change what Windows does, like formatting both hard drives since it thought it had to put a boot loader in place of Linux and all of my data.

YOU LOSE. Good day sir.

I did not miss read, because I'm not stupid, and it was for from Linux's fault
You obviously did or you wouldn't have this problem.
no, I know why it happened, but I didn't expect it to happen...

When I was installing windows I told it to Format the one hard drive. With Windows being Windows it had to have a boot loader on the other HDD, but because it couldn't read the other HDD so it went and formatted it.
So you told it to format the hard drive and it did.

You've got to be the smartest person I know.
You have to be the dumbest person I know.

Me: Format HDD2
Windows: FORMATTING HDD 1!!!!
Hold on. So you're saying that there was an option to select which hard drive to format? If that's true, you shouldn't have a problem.

EXACTLY! But Windows thought it knew better so it had to format the other HDD for its boot loader...so wtf was the point of selecting which HDD to format is beyond me....

So you didn't bother to back up your old data just in case? Sounds like it's still your fault to me.

I did back it up....but the back up I had on CD Windows decided it wasn't aloud to open the backup files, so I have to use Linux of course to get to those files.

Cool, I'm getting a new laptop soon too. I don't know what to get though... All I know is I want it to be Windows. :D
