The night is still and its air is soft to the skin. But the grues are about. You know this, and make haste to the nearest shelter, hoping to find some sign that you're not the only survivor.
The first floor of the shelter is devoid of any human life aside from your own, which churns the heavy breaths from your mouth as your heart races. The grues are silent, and do not attack...but they watch. And you know this.
You come to a fork in the main hallway of floor B2. Still no signs of human life. But something isn't right...you know this. The grues become more restless and you hear their desperate longings...you know they're waiting for the perfect chance to attack...when you won't be able to fight back. The left path goes to the floor's main kitchen. The other goes to a food storage room. Along each path there are several other doors, but you do not know their purposes. The grues know something that you do not. You get the feeling that you must choose your next move carefully if you are to survive. The grues are on edge, waiting.
You must choose your path. But remember, you are likely to be eaten by a grue. And if you are, your story will come to an end. If you encounter a grue, you'd best choose your next move wisely then, as well.
The option most chosen by the end of the first page will be chosen. You'd best hope that your votes lend well to your fate...

There have to be enough votes to finish up this page of the thread to decide which direction to go, first.
Of course these non-vote posts I'll try to not count unless I'm lazy.
sounds like the main kitchen is the place that we should be going to advance, so wouldn't it make more sense to go to the storage room first to see if there are any helpful items to grab before we set off into unexplored territory?
Kitchen. Knives. LET'S KILL THOSE DANG GRUES.
...whatever they are.

GO RIGHT
The grues will most likely dismember you and cook you piece by piece.
RIGHT.
The grues know something...
Right is the right way 8)
Hrm.. Well, it depends if the kitchen is safe. If we went right and then got food, we could bring it back to the kitchen. However, it seems dangerous to go to the right without weapons. However, if we go to the kitchen, we could possibly find knives. We don't know what the hell is in those doors, they could just be mops, which won't help us much. It would seem odd to keep any real weapon such as a gun in a hallway leading to a food storage room or kitchen. We are likely to be eaten by a grue.
Also, Kaz, it would be nice to know exactly what I am wearing. It is important to know if I have pockets or not. I will need to carry items at some point or another. I will really need to carry stuff if we make the decision to head left, get weapons, then head right to get supplies.
I say go left.
How can you prove the grue exists? I, for one, have yet to see one, and I'm likely to be eaten by a grue almost every minute of the day. Sounds like a bunch of hokey stories to me.

You don't know if it's safe, obviously. And what you're wearing is not important, but if you must know, you have a few pockets for carrying stuff. But more importantly, you have a backpack, so that will make storing many things easy, but of course it will be difficult to carry many weapons that can be retrieved quickly.

Your doubt sustains them and gives them life.
The votes have spoken, and you feel that right is the way to go. Turning away from the kitchen path, you make your way down the right hallway, staring down the large door at the end that reads "Storage B221." You look cautiously at the doors to your right and left as you pass by them. The grues are silent still, and make no notion of audible eagerness as you stop and turn to face one door that catches your attention. It has a sign on it that reads "Authorized Personnel Only." You reach for the door handle, but your hand stops short as you hear a faint scratching coming from the other side of the door. The hair on your neck stands on end and your heartbeat races.
Do you open the door, or disregard it and keep heading for the storage room? This time the choice will be decided simply from the next 3 votes.
By the way, because I forgot to do it before, an inventory check:
Backpack contains: 1 first aid kit, enough dried food for 3 days, 1 heavy stick
Pockets contain: 1 lighter
You may do request an inventory check at any time, should you forget what you have.
Keep heading for the storage room.
We are likely to be eaten by a grue, so intercourse it. Lets see who, or what, is behind that door.
Open it
Whoa, slow down there.
Open backpack, take out heavy stick and lighter in case it is dark, or if you need to fight with the stick.
Now continue with the opening of the door, since the three votes have been submitted.
QuoteYour doubt sustains them and gives them life.
Flip-flopping now, are we? Originally, it was the darkness that gave them life. What next, they only exist because it says they exist, or because we can't prove they don't?
This horrific joke of a myth is seeming to become more like a religion by the minute.
Keep going.

I was being sarcastic and was trying to tell you to just roll with it instead of doubting, but okay.
The votes say we open it, but even though Custom's vote wasn't within the first three, I'm going to take his extra suggestion into consideration and be cautious.
You look around nervously, and take off your backpack, setting it down silently so as not to awaken whatever may be lurking behind every conceivable shadow. Even more carefully you unzip the large back pocket, the seperation of every tooth on the zipper sounding louder and louder as you struggle to stay quiet. You withdraw the heavy stick you found on the way, just in case you need a weapon for whatever lies in wait behind that door. You also take your lighter from your pocket. Having zipped your backpack up, you put it back on your shoulders and reach for the door handle. You take a big breath, and turn the handle, pushing with your shoulder against the door. It gives way to your weight with a loud creak.
Suddenly you hear it. The heavy breathing and low, guttural growls coming from behind you. A grue? You don't take time to find out. You push the door open the rest of the way quickly, rush in, and turn around to slam the door shut. You force yourself against the door to keep it shut, and the thing in the hallway slams back, growling who knows what at you. You know you cannot overpower the thing in the hallway. You think it is the end for you. But strangely, it does not try to get through the door again. It seems content in allowing you to escape for now. You do not understand...but just in case, you push a nearby heavy chair in front of the door.
You realize now how hot it is in this room. You turn around to look about, and you realize you're in a boiler room. There is a faint dripping from a leaky pipe above you, and you notice that someone had been trying to fix it, as there is a stepladder with a lonely wrench sitting on top of it. Strangely, there's a desk in the middle of the room. That must be from where you pulled the chair from in your fright. It seems that someone had tried to make this boiler room into their office. There's another door in here on the wall to your left. But before doing anything, you search the desk. There is a 9mm handgun in the top drawer. The rest is empty. There don't seem to be any 9mm cartridges in sight...so the gun seems useless at the moment, as gun itself is empty as well. There's a note on the floor that reads "Evac Plans" and says nothing more. Looks like they decided to either run off with no plan at all or they're all dead already.
Satisfied with your search, you consider your next move. You could take something from the office or leave it all. And then, as for going somewhere, you could leave the office through that new door or go back to where that thing might be and try to get to that storage room. But really, you don't know where you might even find any survivors...if there are any.
Best of 5 votes plus any additional advice as to inventory changes or otherwise will suffice.
Keep the wrench, the gun, and proceed through the new door.
Take the gun, plans, and wrench.
Spoilers: THEY KILLED AN ENGINEER
Take the items, and go back out.
take the gun, wrench, leave the plans, take the stepladder. go back out through the door you entered.
Oh, are there any bullet casings on the floor? If so, that could indicate there was some struggle.

Oh, are there any bullet casings on the floor? If so, that could indicate there was some struggle.
No. No evidence of gunfire anywhere other than an empty gun, if you can count that as evidence.
Put the main weaponry in your pack, along with the plans.
Also take the stepladder.
You decide to pocket the gun and wrench. Your pants pockets are now full, but you feel safer that you at least have one thing you can use as a weapon, and one that can possibly be used as one later on. You don't know why, but you also take the blank plans. Perhaps paper could come in handy later?
You turn around and notice the stepladder again. You think that it may be useful. You pick it up, but then you feel stupid because you realize you have nowhere big enough to store it. It's not that small of a stepladder, after all. You will have to leave it, unfortunately. Too bad, because it could have come in handy. But carrying it would slow you down, so you forget the idea of the ladder.
You push the chair aside and press your ear to the door you just came through, listening. Whatever was there seems to be gone now. You open the door silently and quickly exit, taking the new wrench out of your pocket and wielding it in your right hand as you tiptoe along the hallway you were previously making your way down...toward the storage room.
You find yourself standing in front of the storage room door. You grab the handle and turn. Nothing. It won't turn. It's locked. You curse under your breath.
Now what do you do? There's the right hallway going to the kitchen...or that new door in that office. Or maybe...something else?
Any items we could throw away for the ladder?
Also, take the kitchen. With wrench in one hand, and gun in another.

No, it's a ladder. It's too big to fit in your backpack, so the only way to carry it would be...to hold it. But that renders you defenseless and slow, so I wouldn't advise it.
wait, what? the room you just left (the right hallway door) locked behind you? what just happened?
and when i said take the stepladder, i assumed it was one of those fold-up ones, and that the backpack would have some sort of strap on the back, bulking you up and slowing you down, but still allowing you to move.

It's fine to assume things. You can do it as often as you like. It's just that this particular ladder is too big.
And no, you went back out into the hallway and kept going the way you were before you even went into the office/boiler room. You know, the right hallway from the beginning that leads to storage. The storage room is locked.
The left hallway from the beginning that leads to the kitchen hasn't even been explored yet, nor has the other door in the office/boiler room been opened.
I say...go to the office!

There is a possibility the wrench would break, and you wouldn't want to waste a gunshot on a door. Not to mention the noise could attract a grue.

The lock is a deadbolt built into the door that you'd need a key for. You can't "shoot it out," and you don't have any 9mm cartridges anyway, remember?

I'm siding with Silver on this one.
Also, for future use, take the mini-flashlight. Never know if you spot a Grue.
You open up your backpack and dig out your small first aid kit, withdrawing from it a small, thumb-sized flashlight that activates simply by squeezing it. Cheap, but at least somewhat useful if one can't see any other way...or if one encounters a grue.
You decide that there's certainly no way to break down the door without attracting unwanted attention, and you may not have time to find a key, so you decide to pick the lock. You take one of the hairpins out of your hair and attempt to pick the lock. After several minutes of frustration, you hear the tumblers move and the lock clicks. You've done it! But...the pin seems to be stuck. You try to pull it out, but breaks. Oh well. At least you have another one. Fashion will have to be cast aside for the time being.
You take the heavy stick back out of your backpack, weilding it again just in case. You carefully open the storage room door and slowly step inside, shining the flashlight as it becomes apparent that the storage room is extremely dark. You reach for a lightswitch to your left. It clicks but nothing happens. The power must be out, or perhaps the lightbulb is dead.
You search around the garage-like room and find many things, but few of them seem to be of any use to you, as most are too large or are packaged tightly already. You stop as something of particular interest reflects the light from the flashlight. It's a key. A very large, rusted, ancient-looking key. It almost looks like something some old pirate would've used to lock away his treasure.
You walk over to pick it up, but something's odd. You've stepped on something that doesn't feel like the floor. You shine your flashlight down and discover, with a frightened gasp, that you've stepped on a corpse. Recently deceased, judging by the still-liquid blood covering the deep wound in its back. It looks as if something ripped a hole through him.
You look away quickly and survey the rest of the room quickly, not wanting to suffer the same fate as he did. There's a table in the middle of the room, upon which sits a map of the floor you're on. You read that most of the living quarters on this floor are past the kitchen. If there are any survivors, you might want to look there. There doesn't seem to be any mention of the door in the boiler room on the map. Maybe the map is outdated?
You notice that there's a somewhat short rope hanging in one corner of the room. It looks like it was recently sliced into the smaller piece that is now.
There doesn't seem to be anything else of use readily visible...
Now what?
Inventory reminder:

I'll laugh if he actually does that.
Anyway, now we should go to that office from before!
You attempt to stuff the corpse in your backpack for later use. It doesn't seem to fit.
You wonder about taking his heart or teeth, but decide against it. That's icky. But you bash his teeth out with the wrench anyway to vent your frustration.
Suddenly you stop being retarded and decide to just check the dead man for anything useful. His pockets are empty except for a box of 9mm cartridges in one of his back pockets. You load the handgun and put it back in your pocket and store the remaining cartridges in your other pocket with the wrench.
You seem to have forgotten why you even came here. You sit down and meditate, and you remember that you're here to find survivors. Maybe even your family is here. You hope so, anyway.
You look around to see if there's a door to this garage-like room. There doesn't seem to be one...must just be built as a shed with no other way out. A hasty add-on, no doubt.
The rope isn't attached to anything, and there doesn't seem to be anything under the table...
You take the key and store it in the small front pocket of your backpack.
Feeling satisfied, you exit the room and find yourself in the hallway again. You just realize that it's gotten darker. Wasn't there a light on in this hallway before? Maybe the power is out on the whole floor...or worse, the whole building. You feel your way around and eventually make your way back to the boiler room again. You reach for the door handle and turn...but wait, what? It's locked! But you were just in there a few moments ago. Something isn't right here.
You ponder your next move...
the teeth were legitimate... they were something to throw as a distraction...
so was the heart... it was meant to be bait.
by the way, is the corpse warm or cold?
so... what. gonna find survivors then all die from the grues? are they all around outside? if so, then how did you manage to get inside in the first place? why would your family be here? is this their house? if thats the case, you wouldnt need a map, because you would have it memorized. is this a random rundown building? in which case, why is your family here? is it an apartment block? refugee shelter? >_>
grues dont have opposable thumbs, so they can't have locked the door. knock on the door.
either that, or,

except that there are grues about, and there may be a random grue inside that somehow locked the door, and that if you break down the door you wont be able to lock it later, and...
we could go back to the corpse and smash its head, taking out the ear bones to use as lock picks.

Who said anything about killing them? You can at least hope that it might stall them and give you seconds to get away.
And besides, we have no way of knowing if grues really are the only threat here.

I already went through loading the gun.
You take out the map again and look over it carefully. The only place on this floor that you can get to right now since the door you're standing next to is locked is the kitchen, and then whatever lies beyond that. The map shows most of the residence rooms shortly beyond the kitchen. Perhaps there are survivors there?
Quote from: Jono2 on September 15, 2008, 07:21:38 PM
the teeth were legitimate... they were something to throw as a distraction...
so was the heart... it was meant to be bait.
by the way, is the corpse warm or cold?
so... what. gonna find survivors then all die from the grues? are they all around outside? if so, then how did you manage to get inside in the first place? why would your family be here? is this their house? if thats the case, you wouldnt need a map, because you would have it memorized. is this a random rundown building? in which case, why is your family here? is it an apartment block? refugee shelter? >_>
grues dont have opposable thumbs, so they can't have locked the door. knock on the door.
either that, or,
is there any guarantee that this is in fact the boiler room?
Still, you're a girl and those things seemed impractical to take because they were icky. </3
You were coming home from college hoping to spend a nice weekend with your family, but by the time you got to the town, you saw that the whole place had been fenced off and quarantined. There were signs all around saying to beware of something called "grues." You disregarded the fences and ran to your house, finding it abandoned except for a note from your mother saying that they went to the shelter.
The shelter's exterior doors, for reasons unknown, were unlocked (and ripped apart, at that). Something had to have broken in. You saw on a "you are here" sign in the entry room of the shelter that most of the living quarters are on floor B2, so it made sense to check there first. That floor is where you are now. Unfortunately, the elevator broke down after you managed to get down there. Convenient, right?
Continuing the story...
You know for a fact that it is the boiler room...it still has the same "Authorized Personnel Only" sign and it seems to be the same door according to the map. You don't know who, what, why, or when that door was locked, but it's locked...that's for sure. You knock on the door. No reply. You knock harder. Still nothing.
You try the key in the lock. It's too big for the lock...it doesn't even fit at all. Damn.
I say we head for the kitchen, where I'm sure we'll discover some gruesome stuff, like family members torn apart or whatever.
By the way, I'm not doing any more of this tonight. You can post, but I won't check them or add to the story until tomorrow.
k, thanks for clearing that up. it was bothering me the entire time, and i was basically expecting a "intercourse you" after posting that lol :P
if we went back to the shed, i suspect that we'd just find that the body had disappeared inexplicably.
the kitchen will have all sorts of gruesome things, and possibly some keys.
onto the kitchen, flashlight for light. conserve the lighter and stick for when we need to light something on fire or fend it off.

Well, since our first idea was heading for the Kitchen, I don't suppose why not.
So what do we have in our inventory right now?
To the kitchen.

Quote from: Silverhawk79 on September 16, 2008, 06:41:02 AM
So what do we have in our inventory right now?
1 9mm handgun (full)
4 extra 9mm rounds
1 first aid kit
1 hairpin
1 wrench
1 heavy stick
1 evac plan sheet
1 backpack (1/4 full)
1 rusty key
You sigh and turn away from the boiler room door. Looks like you can't get in there right now, and you don't feel like wasting the other hairpin right now just in case you need to use it for something more important.
You walk down the hall, coming to where you started. This time, you take the left path and head to the kitchen. You reach the kitchen door, and, crossing your fingers beforehand, you reach for the large double-door handles and pull. They swing open easily. Finally, an unlocked door!
You take the flashlight out and shine it around the kitchen you've found yourself in, hoping not to find anything particularly gruesome this time. Luckily, this seems to be nothing but an ordinary kitchen. A large one, but ordinary still. Except...ugh, what's that smell? You shine the light on one countertop and find a half-sliced fish, head still attached. The large knife still lays on the cutting board next to the fish. Apparently someone didn't have time to finish cooking...or at least cleaning up.
There's another set of double-doors opposite of you. According to the map, another hallway is behind those, and there are doors in that hall that are all rooms that people would stay in for extended periods if they had to stay in the shelter. "Residence Hall" reads a sign above the doors.
You look around the rest of the room. A lot of food everywhere, and all sorts of assorted kitchenware. But there doesn't seem to be much of anything that's useful. You look around the many tables...nothing. Except, strangely, a notebook. There's a label on it that says "Jennifer."
You can't find anything else interesting in the room. You ponder your next move...
for the lulz, read that notebook.
Get more food, and head for the hallway.
Take notebook and knife.
Clean off the knife first, in case the blood/guts on the knife attract grues.
read the notebook
check the ceiling
slice off a chunk of fish, wash the knife, take the knife, take the chunk of fish. move on with the knife in hand.
BUMP IT
It was about to get to page 2 :O
Do we really need more weapons? How big is the knife?
I guess you could take some of the fish to bait grues away from you, that is if they're interested in rotting fish.
You sit down and open the notebook. It seems to be a diary. Not a very safe thing to keep a diary in...this "Jennifer" must not have had anything better to write in. Most of the entires seem meaningless...tidbits of her personal life as far back as about a year ago. You flip the pages until you're almost to the last page, when something catches your eye. An entry from yesterday.
QuoteDear Diary,
I don't know why they're still keeping us here. They keep telling us that the grues have all gone...so why are we still locked in here? I can't see how anyone profits from this. And we can't survive forever, what with our limited food supply...
And just what the hell is a grue anyway? I never saw any of these supposed monsters...I've heard of them, but I thought they were just part of a fairytale. I hadn't heard of any victims or anything like that before they hauled us off to this shelter.
I don't understand what's going on here. Nobody does. And we haven't seen the mayor since he first holed himself up in his office, so nobody's been able to find out anything about what's going on...those soldiers won't tell us anything.
I'm scared, Diary.
There are no entries after this one...
You feel that this entry is very important, and you begin to wonder yourself what's going on here. You put the notebook in your backpack, as it may pay to have some paper, and that entry might be worth looking at again.
You walk over to the fish on the counter and take the knife, cleaning it off first and then wielding it as a new weapon. You also place a slice of the fish in a little sandwich bag you found in one of the drawers in the counter. It may not be suitable for eating, but it may come in handy as grue bait. You put it in your backpack.
You shine the flashlight on the ceiling. It's...uh, a ceiling. Nothing interesting stuck up there or anything. The fan is still moving slowly...it must have been on high until the power went off.
You decide to press onward, wielding your knife in one hand and the flashlight in the other. You slowly push open the big double-doors and step into a new hallway, this one much nicer-looking. You shine the flashlight around and notice that there's several doors in this hallway. You check all the handles...and most of them are locked. But there's one near the end that isn't. It reads "Residence B211."
You enter the room and your eyes are immediately assaulted by something you didn't want to see. A woman hangs from a noose attached to a very large hook that seemed hastily drilled into the ceiling. She's naked and bruised all over.
Catching your breath after the initial fright of seeing the woman, you sit down on a chair and put your head in your hands. Thoughts rush through your head...
what the hell is going on here? Why would she kill herself instead of trying to survive until the grues had left?

Then why haven't the grues eaten her yet?
Also, what if this girl Jennifer killed the person in the office or whatever? HM?!
Are there any other doors that aren't locked that we haven't been through already?
thats because there are no grues, btw.
uhh, search the room, is her hair done up? check the floor for more hairpins, the washroom for small metal objects to use as lockpicks.
look at the back of the door you just opened. are there windows? look out the windows. move the furniture around, check for secret passages, check the map to see where to go next.
Okay, so my post just erased itself somehow, and I'm not going to write all of that again, so let me just summarize the findings here:
There are no hairpins or anything else useful to be found in the room. The girl's hair is straight and not done up with hairpins. You search the room for anything...and don't find anything until you realize the floor under a small rug creaks unnaturally. You discover a trapdoor under the rug. You open it and can't see anything inside, so it must be a rather long drop...and there's no ladder.
Will you chance dropping down inside?

Just the trapdoor right next to you and the door inside the boiler room that we can't get to anymore (because the boiler room door is locked).

In the original post, I mentioned that even with the flashlight you can't see anything down there, and that's why you know it's got to be a long drop.
Just drop something down there first and then ensure it's safe.
If it's a long drop then bring some rope.
