Title: There's a road ahead...(Old ver.)
Post by: SkyMyl on December 18, 2008, 08:32:07 PM
EDIT: Well, this died, as you can tell. I just stopped working on it. But, I've revived it. You can find the new, one-shot "There's a road ahead..." here (http://www.nsfcd.com/forums/index.php?topic=32273.0)!

"...Ugh...."

It would seem you just woke up from your slumber. You get off the bumpy seats you had been lying down on the whole ride. It would seem you fell asleep during the bus ride.

The only two people in the bus are you and the driver, and the driver is obviously in the middle of driving the bus. As you look out the window, you see that you're in the desert. You still haven't reached your destination yet. Just then, the bus creeks to a stop. The Driver turns around to face you and says that it's the last stop. Opening the bus doors, he urges you to get off the bus. You assume that your at your destination, so you pick up your backpack and step off the bus, but as you land on the ground and look ahead of you, you realize you were wrong. There is no house, there is no stable, there is no market, there is no church, nothing. You look behind you and see the road the bus was driving on, now the road the bus is driving down. You look ahead and see the same road split into two seperate paths. You can't go back, seeing as you spent over one hundred dollars to get this far. Looking ahead, the two roads stretch...and seperate the farther they stretch...it would seem as though nothing awaits at the end of both of these roads. You have no choice but to take a path. But, which one?

Take the path to the left
Take the path into the right
??? (You don't know what it is until you choose it.)

Thinking it over, you decide to see what happens when you walk down the middle path, as the path less traveled. And so you walk. And walk. And walk. And still walk. It seems like you've been walking for hours, with the hot sun beating down on your head. But then you remember, it's only been fifteen minutes. Shaking your head, you walk just a little further until you see something ahead. A house. At least, it appears to be a house, from as far as you're standing. Running forward, it only takes you a few minutes to discover what you were squinting at moments ago.

It is in fact, a house. A brown, 2 story house with an empty doghouse on your left. You're about to go and knock on the front door, when you realize, what would a house be doing in a lifeless, secluded desert? Looking behind you again, you see that the two roads have vanished. You look back at the front door and knock three times, and wait for someone to answer. While you're waiting, you look at the porch and see a shovel to your side. Suddenly, you hear a Female voice scream out.

"Someone...anyone...Please, HELP ME!!! I'm i-"

The voice is cut off. You know you can't stand and do nothing, and you pick up the shovel and use it as an axe, chopping down the wooden door until you can make a hole big enough for you to climb through. After some effort, you go through the hole and find yourself inside the house. It's a dark hallway, with a flight of stairs in front of you, the bathroom on your left, and the kitchen to your right.

You don't know if anyone heard you break through the door, and don't know if there's anyone else here. You should have enough time to check a few rooms.

Go to the bathroom
Go upstairs (WARNING: If you go upstairs, you won't be able to come back down!)
Go to the kitchen

You decide to see what's in the bathroom, so you start cautiously walking to the left, back against the wall. Looking at the hallway as you're doing so, you can see it's a poorly kept house. Planks from the wooden floor are missing, the paintings on the walls have tears and scratches on them, blood stains everywhere, and shattered urns. You take note of this and reach the door that clearly says 'Bathroom' on it. Reaching for the handle, you see a green tab above it that says vacant. Taking this as your sign to hide in here for a while, you open the door and go in.

Inside the bathroom, it's actually surprisingly nice. Ocean blue wallpaper, a nice, large mirror in front of the sink, cabinents on the walls, a bookcase for those who want to read on the toilet, but it's awfully small. Lifting the lid up off the toilet, you take one look and you're disgusted. The toilet bowl is dirty beyond belief, and the site is revolting. It would be improper for a lady such as yourself to sit on that! Looking back in the mirror, your hair is a mess. Taking a brush from your backpack, you straighten it the way you like it, and put the brush back in. Then you decide to search around the bathroom for anything that might be of use to you. Searching through the cabinents, it seems perfectly normal, with dental care products and hair care products about. While rummaging through the cabinent under the sink, you see a small handgun on its side, next to some ammo. Taking the gun, you make sure the safety is on, and put it in your pocket. You take the ammo and put it in the other pocket, then you sit next to the sink to wait and think for a while.

You still don't know where your friend's house went, you don't know where you are, and you don't know why you're saving someone you haven't even met yet. Sudden impulse, perhaps? Maybe you heard her voice before? You also wonder why there's a house in scenic nowhere, and why someone would be in danger here. As the thoughts race through your head, you think you've waited long enough, pick up your shovel, and walk back to the hallway. In a few minutes, you're right back where you started, and no one seems to have heard you break in. You may only have a few minutes left to explore, but you don't know if you should go upstairs or to the kitchen.

Go Upstairs
Go to the Kitchen

You decide to walk upstairs, up the creeking steps. While it's very awkward and unleveled, the stairs, you manage to make it to the top in very little time. More like a foyer than a hallway. In front of you, there's a Gold Double Door, which stands out from the rest of the dirty, delepitated house's layout. To your Left, there are three doors. To your Right, there is a single door. It would seem you're faced with another three-way choice.

Go through the Double Doors.
Go to the Left.
Go to the Right.

??? is now in play.

(Yes, very brief and not as in-depth as the other parts. But now the fun begins. I also got impatient.)

You go through the Double Doors, confident in your choice. The door leads to a jewel encrusted hallway, and a short one at that.. As you reach the exit, you see an even larger pair of double doors, even gaudier than the last, with jewels, gold paint, diamonds, rubies, and the like. You place the Shovel on the straps of your backpack, and pull out your Handgun as self-defense, you walk through. The room appears to be a church of sorts, with all sorts of people praising an idol on a pedestal on the far side of the room. Unfortunately, these people heard you walk through the doors. One of them asks,

"Who the hell are you!?"

"...just a traveler. Nothing more."

"If she's a traveler, why does she have a gun?"

"She must be a spy, sent by...them."

You ready your gun.

"Which one?"

"Considering the circumstances...three."

"We cannot afford to take chances. Kill the girl!"

The people start rushing towards you, and you start shooting at them with your gun, but after shooting six down, you realize there are far too many for you to keep at bay. Backing up to escape back through the double doors, the doors won't budge. You pull them, and they won't move. You're trapped in. Suddenly, a gunshot pierces your stomach, and you fall to the floor, writhing in pain. Is this the end? Who or what were they referring too? All fades to black as the thoughts race through your head...

...and then you realize you haven't gone through the doors yet. You're still in the second floor of the foyer, and have not moved at all. Taking a deep breath, you realize that you are alive, and that it was probably a hallucination of sorts. You don't know if that's truly what lies ahead through those doors, but you'd rather not take the chance again. Not yet.

Go to the Left
Go to the Right

If you make a mistake, a jewel gets taken off this "health" bar. This mistake that just occrred only made the bar visible. Be careful, you can never refill this bar once a piece gets taken off.
Now...where are we going?

January 13 Edit: The health bar feature has been dropped. Repeat, The health bar that was just mentioned will not appear in the game any further. Ignore the next few posts that argue about the Health Bar. Instead, wrong choices will result in a penalty of sorts.

The "health" bar? Okay, here's a better way to put it. You can only make eight more mistakes, because the tenth mistake will end the adventure game on the dime. It's more like the Sanity meter. So there's room for error.

If it's about my story telling, I know it sucks.

You go to the door on the right, which has a label on it that says, "WARNING: KEEP ALL FORMS OF FIRE AWAY FROM THIS ROOM". How cute. You decide to just open the door, and inside is a small room filled with firearms. On all the walls, stacked in piles, and on Shelves. You know that you'll need a few weapons, as you don't know if what you saw is actually what lies through the double doors. After placing your shovel next to the door, you look inside the room. You take another handgun, a survival pouch, some Grenades, and a Sawed-Off Shotgun. Closing the door carefully, you wonder if anyone in here is using these weapons. You decide to destroy it when you're done here. Walking back to the Double Doors, you think you're prepared now. Just then,

"If anyone's here, HELP ME!!! PLEAFF! MMMPH!? MMMPH!!!"

There's the voice again! It's coming from the door to the left! Should you rescue the girl, or go through the Double Doors again?

Go to the left and save the life of a girl

You can't leave an innocent lady to her doom! Sprinting to the left, you see three doors. You don't know where the voice came from, so you decide to knock on the door to your left. After about half a minute, you don't get a response. You knock on the door in front of you. Nothing. You knock on the door to your right, and you hear a Male voice shout.

"WHO'S THERE!? Arron, is that you!?"

Pulling out your Handgun for defense, you knock on the door again, just in case.

"Knocking twice in a row? That's Arron all right." *Click*

You hear a click sound, and the knob on the door starts to turn. Hiding behind the still-opening door, you decide to catch the man by surprise. After about a minute of waiting, you hear the man ask, "Arron? Are you there? Arron? You. Wait right here." The man walks out of the room, looking around the room, with a confused gaze on his face. You decide to strike now. Walking from behind the door, you tackle the man to the floor. The man falls over, taken by surprise. Holding him down, you take the safety off your gun and hold it at his neck.

"What in the...AAHHH! Who are you!?"
You hold him tighter, still. "I'm a traveler. But it would seem you're torturing an innocent woman, and I can't let that go unnoticed."
"She...she saw what we do here...and we had to dispose of her. But we've decided to keep her here for the time being."
"'We'? So there's more people here?"
"Y-yes."
"What of this building?"
"It's o-our base of operations. Our last one to be exact. Should anything happen to it, we would be screwed."
"What is it you do here?"
The man whimpered.
"Answer me!"
The man started to cry.
"dang it, answer me!"
He was still crying.
"For the last time, answer me or I will kill you!"
"I'm going to die...nothing can change that now."

You grow severely impatient and pull the trigger on your gun. The bullet goes through the man's back, thus killing him. You get up off of him and look back at him. Why would his death be inevitable? What was going on in this house? How did you get here to begin with? The questions race through your mind, but you dismiss them for now. Walking through the open door, you see a girl, roughly your age, brown hair and green eyes, bound and gagged to a chair. She is wearing nothing but a Bra and Panties, leading you only assume what the man did to her. You take the gag off of her, and she lets in a breath of relief.

"Who are you?"
"M-my name is Sophia. I was on my way to the Market, but I saw this house as opposed to a single building. I knocked on the door, and when no one answered, I just decided to walk in. That's when I got captured. But who are you?"
"My name is Elena. I was on my way to a friend's house but the area was entirely different. There was a fork in the road. I took the middle path, found this house, and I wound up here. I heard someone scream, so I walked inside to see what it was.
"That would be me..."
"What was that man doing to you?"
"He...he..." She started to tear up.

She runs into your arms and starts to cry. Holding her close to your chest, you comfort her. Great, you just made a sexually tortured girl cry. Where do you want go from here?

Ask her what she knows about this place.
Ask her if she saw anything suspicious.
Ask her to join you.

(...okay, 'Fan'service time is over. That's all you get.)

Sophia is still in your arms, crying. Acting somewhat flustered, you decide to comfort her.
"I'm sorry...I didn't mean to make you cry."
Sophia lifts her head up and sits back down onto the chair. She sniffles and wipes away her tears. "I-it was awful...I'd rather not talk about it..."

Feeling a little guilty, you think it be best to change the subject. Perhaps Sophia has discovered something about this place, and what's going on in it.

"Did you happen to stumble upon anything suspicious before you were captured?"
"Ten minutes after I walked  The place was littered with all sorts of mooks, but I did happen to chance upon something odd."
"What might that be?"
"A woman was opening the door to the fridge inside the Kitchen."
"She opened the door to the fridge? That sounds perfectly normal."
"But she climbed into the fridge, as opposed to taking something to eat from it."
"She climbed into it?"
"I think it's an elevator, disguised as a fridge. That's the only thing conclusion I can draw from it."

You're glad you saved her, otherwise you would have missed this detail.

"Is there anything else you know?"
She looks away from you and closes her eyes, as if in thought. "No, that's about it."

It sounded like she was lying, but you don't know for sure. You also think Sophia could be very helpful in discovering what's going on here.

"Elena, what are you going to do now?"
"I'm well equipped, and if something bad is going on in this house, I have to at least try to stop it."
"W-would you mind if I joined you?"
"But of course. I need all the help I can get. There's a closet just across the hall filled with all sorts of firearms. We can stock up there. Do you know how to use a handgun?"
"Yes. My cousin used to be a police officer, but that's all I know how to use."
"Okay, then let's go stop these mooks!"

Just as you're about to make the most overly dramatic exit you can think of, Sophia stops you.

"Wait, I need to put my clothes back on."
"Oh. Umm...yeah, that would be smart."

While Sophia puts on her jeans, green shirt, and brown jacket, you think to yourself again. Something was wrong here. While you don't know what, you vow to stop it, no matter what it might be. And yet, you also wonder if you can actually trust this girl. You look back at the man you just murdered minutes ago. The pool of blood almost covered the entire floor, and was dripping off of this floor onto the floor below. Someone was bound to notice the blood soon, if there was anyone downstairs. But then again, it's been at least three minutes since you shot the man and no one came rushing toward the sound of the gunshot. There was also one other thing that was bugging you: How long have you been blushing?

Go through the Double Doors
Go to the Kitchen

Post by: SkyMyl on January 02, 2009, 07:49:29 AM
Just as you're about to walk down the stairs, Sophia stops you from going any further. You turn to her and she points out something.

"Elena, we can't leave that man's body just lying there on the floor. We have to do something with it before someone notices!"
"But there's still the matter of the blood on the floor itself. We couldn't clean that off."
"Regardless, we still have to dispose of the body."

Nodding your head, you gesture for Sophia to pick up the legs of the man's now lifeless body whilst you both carry him to the closet Sophia was just trapped in. With some effort, you're able to pick the man up and drag him to the closet. Taking two towels out of the closet, you shut the door behind you. That's when you remember the two doors next to the closet. What could lie behind them. You give the towels to Sophia and ask her if she could clean the blood. Sophia responds in the affirmative and takes the towels. You walk to the doors and open the one across the closet. Immediately upon opening the doors, you are greeted with a foul odor. Covering your nose, you look inside the room.

It's completely empty. There is nothing inside but the blackness of the walls. Just as you decide to walk inside, you hear a crunching sound. You look down and find is causing the smell. At least a dozen rotting corpes lie in the room, and you just so happened to step on the only skeleton. Letting out a small shriek, you back away and slam the door. It would seem that this room contains the victims of this organization. After regaining your composure, you walk into the remaining door. Through that door is a similar room as the last two, small and empty. But at the bottom of the room is a small key. You don't know why these three rooms are empty, but you pick up the key and put it in your pocket.

You double back to Sophia, who just finished mopping up the mess you made. Lying out the second towel on top of the blood stain, she throws the blood stained towel to you, which you catch and throw into the closet. Walking across the hall to the Closet with the weapons in it, you open it and tell Sophia to take what she wants. Sophia takes another handgun, and finds nothing of interest. But she decides to dig into the pile a bit and chances upon a small machete. Swinging it around a few times for giggles, she also finds a Shotgun and some Shotgun shells. She decides to take these three items, and closes the door. Afterwards, she turns to face you and asks what you want to do.

On one hand, you're armed even better than before, with a partner, so you think you should be able to stand your own and go through the Double Doors. But you haven't explored the Kitchen yet, and there might be an elevator somewhere there, according to Sophia's claim. You don't know if you'll be able to come back up again, though.

We couldn't reach an agreement before, so let's try again. Where do you want to go?

Go through the Double Doors
Go down to the Kitchen

Double Doors.

You don't know what lies behind those Double Doors but you assume it can wait. You tell Sophia that you should inspect the fridge and see what's in there. So you both continue down the stairs, and go to your left. To the left is a small hallway, and at the end is a door. Through it is the Kitchen.

The house, while filthy, disgusting, creeky, and ominous, was very different from the Kitchen in comparison. The Kitchen was very large, and very roomy. On one side was the counter, spanning the walls with its smooth rock-like surface. Above the counter was a line of cabinents, normally used to hold spices, cans, containers, dishes, and the like. Back to the counter, there was a sink, a drain dish, an oven, a stove, the aforementioned refridgerator, a dish rack, a toaster, a toaster oven, and a microwave. (Not necessarily in that order.) To the right of the kitchen was a long table, cleared off for now, lined with a tablecloth and a vase of flowers.

You look at Sophia and point to the fridge. Running over to it, she grabs the handle of the silver fridge and opens it to find...a perfectly normal fridge. Everything was in order, with bottles of wine, soda, juice, and milk on the door, to the fresh produce in the drawers. Nothing seemed out of place. You decide to inspect the rest of the room to find something else, such as a switch. While you're searching, Sophia wastes no time and pulls out a container labeled 'Leg of Lamb'. She runs over to the drain dish and pulls a fork out, and starts digging in to it. Hearing the rustling, you look towards her and glare at her. With the most Innocent look ever, she offers you some.

"Do you want some lamb? It's still warm!"
"You're eating...while our lives could still be in danger?"
"I haven't eaten in two days! Plus, the better in shape we are now, the more of a chance we'll have for survival later!"

She has you there. You go into the fridge and search around for anything to munch on. Taking out some apples, a few pears, a bunch of bananas, a container of chicken, a container of Steak, and a few bottles of water, you place them on the table and wonder where you're going to put it all.

"Why not put it in the backpack you're wearing?"

A backpack? You reach for your back, and sure enough, it's there. How did you forget you brought your backpack with you? You unzip it and find a few matches, a flashlight, your cell phone (Which is in the process of dying), a map, and your brush. You reach into the fridge again and salvage whatever food you might need, stuff it into a few seperate containers, and place it in your backpack. After placing the backpack on your back, you find it's not that heavy. You then turn to Sophia, who's already finished her food. She runs over to the sink and immediately starts to wash the container. After finding the appropriate cabinent, she places the container in it and places the fork back in the drain dish, then walks back to where you were standing.

"...was there really a need to wash it?"
"Force of habit. I'm sorry."
"Well, this doesn't help our situation. You said there was something suspicious about that fridge, and I don't think you're lying. It does seem rather large compared to other fridges I've seen."
"Ditto on that last part. Hmmm...maybe there's a switch inside it?"
"There's no harm in searching."

You both decide to open the fridge again and look inside. Right next to an unsliced ham, which was foolishly uncovered, there appears to be a small button hidden beside it. Moving the ham to the side, you do see a small button, cleverly hidden so that anyone without curiosity such as yours couldn't find it.

Well, what do you do?

Press the button
Go back upstairs
Inspect the Kitchen some more

(Okay, I fixed some of the errors in my other parts, in a bit of a retcon. Also, I was in a bit of a rush in doing this part...)
(Oh, and tell others to join in! If we only have 3 users voting, then the game is almost set to go in one direction until a mistake is made.)

You can't just hastily press a button without further investigation. You don't know what might happen, but it wouldn't hurt to inspect some more. You tell Sophia that the cabinents above the counter might hold something of interest. While it's a tad cliched, it would be wise to check it out. She replies in the affirmative, afterwards you both walk to the cabinents.

Opening the cabinents, nothing seems out of the ordinary. It's still filled with containers, bowls, plates, and cups, and nothing of importance. You continue checking cabinent until you reach the last one which holds only cookbooks. Thinking there to be something lodged in between the pages in the books, you open them and start to skim through them, finding a note a single sheet of paper lodged between a recipe for Key Lime Pie and Coconut Cream Pie. Placing the book back inside the cabinent, you call Sophia over and show her what it says.

"To all members of the 3rd Squad,

The reason we informed you of the first note's location was to find the second note, which has ultimately led you to this final note. The reason you were made aware of these notes was to find the Safe Key and the Room key to room 7-3, both of which are lodged inside the Ham, which has spoiled by the time you read this note.

You are without a doubt wondering what is happening, and why you are being made aware of the key's location. Squad Zero is becoming far too powerful, and will corrupt the rest of the organization within months. You are the only ones who have the abilities to stop them, by any means necessary. You shall be contacted by a few of our associates, who will help you stop Squad Zero. The remaining four Squads have been informed of this conspiracy, via similar methods to yours, but do not have the proper, well-developed skills to take on this uprising. They will still aid you in any way possible, despite this fact.

As you know, your former captain, Toshi Yamamoto, has recently been murdered. We can only assume that Squad Zero murdered him, possibly because Yamamoto had every piece of information on every Squad. Sophia N. Richardson, the co-captain of the 3rd Division has been promoted to Captain, and will be carrying out this mission. After reading this note, place it on top of the stove in the Kitchen and burn it, leaving no trace of it. Then find the keys from the ham inside the fridge, press the button next to the ham, and go down the elevator. That will be all.

Signed, Evans Miller.
"

Folding the note and placing it in your pocket, you turn to Sophia, who is on her knees, staring into at the floor in shock. You kneel down and calmly ask her:

"Sophia...is that your full name?"
"...yes."
"Do you know what these squads are?"
"No. I'm as stumped as you."
"It states that you have been promoted to Captain of this Third Squad. Do you have any answer to that?"
"I swear, I don't know what the Squads are for!"
"I have to ask you again, why did you come here, Sophia?"
"I told you, I came here to buy some groceries from the Market."
"What did that man do to you?"

Sophia started to tear up a little.

"I...he...."
"Look at me, Sophia. Did the man rape you?"
"I...I...I don't know. I can't remember. I woke up without my clothes on, and I felt pain. He started asking all sorts of bizzarre questions, and demanded I answer him. About five minutes later, you came in."
"Do you remember what kind of questions he asked you?"
"No. Well, now that you mention it...I recall him asking what Squad I was from."
"My last question: Why did you lie about being raped?"
"...I don't know. I was in shock, and I was confused."

Taking a deep breath, you stand up and open the note again. Reading it again, you can't deny it. Something is going on, but you don't know what. You can't leave and do nothing, you still need to figure out what's going on in this house.

"I'm sorry about asking you so many questions, Sophia."

Sophia doesn't respond. Her eyes are closed and she's deep in thought, possibly wondering why part of her memory is gone. After some time, she stands up, takes a deep breath, and walks over to the fridge. She takes out the ham and sets it on the table, and takes a knife from the drain dish. Cutting the ham open, she does in fact find two keys inside it. A gold key, labeled Saviour, and a silver key, with nothing on it. She hands you the keys, which you place in your pocket. She picks up the ham and discards it in the trash.

(OKay, there are no choices here for a reason. The next part is going to play out on its own, but it'll be some time before I can get it out, so think of it as part of a half, as opposed to a small part. Until then, comment on how the chapter was, the game so far, ect. Lastly, you could say this was made up on the spot...so yeah..)

Hmm... I wonder who these Squads are, and what they are doing? I'm assuming that Sophia has either amnesia, is lying, or the letter is talking about her mother. But at least it is safe to also assume she is not one of the bad guys.

Also, we've checked all the other rooms in the house? I know we have for the downstairs. But weren't there other doors upstairs that we failed to explore? Or was that it?
