Title: Languages- Yo prefiero...
Post by: HTA! on March 02, 2009, 07:41:53 PM
Well, sitting here thinking about Bias of Priene I wondered, "What language does NSF want to learn?"

Personally, I would like to learn how to speak Spanish fluently (required course), Italian to get back to my 1/4 roots, or Greek because it is so prevalent in our modern English.

Spanish is just taking over everywhere. Migrant workers are all over the place... and I feel this is the best language to take as a secondary to English.

Plus, all of the other romantic languages such as French and Italian are very similar to Spanish... so I can sort of understand bits and pieces of over 3 languages.

Yep. I really don't care TOO much about other languages. Not trying to be ignorant but I don't plan on leaving America anytime soon. But just for the heck of it...

Japanese so that I don't have to wait for the subs to come out for animes.
Akkadian because that is the most original pun everz
and Greek because they're cool.

would like to learn chinese.  Why?
-being part chinese, it would be nice to have some of that language.
-it's the likely business language of the future.

French, Chinese, and Japanese.

Once you know one romance language fluently, you can pretty much understand the other ones. Chinese and Japanese would both be useful, too.

Oh, and Pitkern for the lulz.

Yo tengo que aprender el idioma castellano o el espanol, porque tengo que saber como hablar como mis padres y mis abuelos. Tambien, el espanol es necessario en este pais y tambien en la ciudad donde que yo vivo.

Igualmente, quiero aprender como hablar el idioma frances y el idioma italiano.

Por favor, disculpa todo los errores y los acentos/tildes.
Yo tengo que aprender mas de mi primer idioma.

As Jono pointed out, it'd be Chinese. It's an increasingly powerful country...but just saying Chinese doesn't work being that there are dialects that are very different. With that said, any of the dialects would work fine for me, say, Mandarin.

The Chinese english base will soon outnumber that of the United States and Canada combined, so they'll be able to push us to their language should they choose.

For those saying "learning one romance language learns all three" you're a moron. It's a common misconception. Sure, there are clear cut similarities, such as the base numbers. But when you cut through to them, there is much different structure, and even word use. Take it from someone who knows French and is proactive in learning Spanish.

You obviously wouldn't be able to speak the others.
But you could catch bits and pieces said to you.

I went to say "Gracias" to this lady and instead I said "Grazie", yet I don't even know Italian... :P

French people are commies.

Anyway... what's with all the Japanophiles? D:

I bet Farcy or Akkadian would be more helpful than... Japanese... D:

Oh and thanks for the German option...

I'd rather not learn a new language.
But I guess Spanish.
Or Chinese. My last name sounds Chinese, so it would be hilarious to know some of it. :P

I want to learn Japanese, Swedish, Icelandic, Russian, and possibly German.

You should put "other" on there.

Or better yet, I can.  So I did.

I think Italian is more closely related to Spanish in structure, than Spanish is to French, although Italian, I think, is more closely related to French.  Anyways, I love the way Italian sounds, but I hate how everyone thinks they all talk with a Mario-intonation .

French, Japanese and English.
;3;
I know some Mandarin but mostly Cantonese since I'm part Chinese as well as Vietnamese. So I'm fluent in both.
I know the basics of Japanese and some other asian languages as well. But I think it be cool to be trilingual in many languages.
And I would like to learn English better. xD; My grammar is quite simple as well as my vocabulary and spelling. (Yay for the dictionary and spell check. ;A;) And there are many words that confuse me. xD And I have to question about it. >A< But my reading/writing level is below average for someone my age.
/Flails.

All the Indian kids at my school have the same problem...

They also pronounce some words awkwardly... but I guess having seen the language all my life I understand the phonetic tendencies of English more than they do,

I speak french fluently. And when people that speak spanish hear me talk they have no idea what I'm saying but yet when they speak spanish I can somewhat understand or have a pretty good guess what they where saying. So Spanish sounds alot like french, not the other way around.

Rofl. I have a accent too. :\
I can never say the word "chocolate" correctly unless I try really hard. xD;; But you don't notice it unless you really look for it. Like I'll pronounce it like, "chalk-a-lick."
Or the world "really?" I say "re-w-a-ly."
I also notice that when I speak english. My voice is much lower. xD Random.
But its hard to speak different languages. Cause your tongue is also not used to the pronunciation of the language is the best way I can try and describe how come other people's pronunciation is off/awkward.
English is like a tongue twister to me when I get to those T's and R's. xD

Nope. :[ I'm not. I learned English like "everything" during 5th grade. I started 3rd. But I was sick so much during my 3rd/4th grade years. So I wasn't really taught much besides naming items. xD 5th grade is when I started doing sentences. Though. It's weird. Since I was born here in the US. Just that my parents never bothered to teach me english. Cause. Well. xD They don't know much themselves. Rofl.

I really wish teachers would actually teach me proper grammar. Infact. xD I don't even know what a 'simile' is. I always was like, "What does a smiley have to do with english." ;3;
Rofl. I still call it a "smiley". What is the pronunciation for simile anyways? xD
Si-m-e?

It's pronounced like "similar" except with an "ee" sound at the end replacing the "ar."

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/simile  You can hear it pronounced by clicking the speaker icon next to the word.
