So, yeah. We were talking about Smash today at school, just randomly. Somebody brought up Melee and said "May-Lee." Me and a few other people I know say "May-Lay."
So, how do you pronounce it? Which is the right way?

I pronounce it exactly like it's spelled -- Mee-lee.

I've always pronounced it May-lay, but I knew someone who pronounced it Mee-lee.

It irked me, and I think he knew it.

I've always said Meh-Lay

I say it as "May-lay". All the other ways I've heard people pronounce it, just doesn't sound right in my opinion.

C'mon guys, of course it's Maylay; the announcer himself says it on the title screen!

Usally May-lay, though sometimes I'll say mee-lee.

 Well last year some kids in my class was having a shouting match about how it's pronounced mee-lee vs may-lay. I'm not joking, they were really shouting at each other about it. So I told them to calm the hell down, that i'll go home and record the announcer saying it but that started more yelling. I never saw my phone that day but all I kept hearing was SUPER SMASH BROTHERS MELEE!!!!!!!!!!!

i didn't know there was an alternate pronounciation.  i say may-lay accept that announcer pronounces samus's name wrong so you don't trust him.

Yeah, I remember that. He says "Sam-us." I've always pronounced it "Sah-mus."

It's always sounded like 'mee-lay' to me.

Those are the only two pronunciations of Mario I know. And I'm pretty sure it's the first one. :P

Tibar's friend pronounces him Mary-oh and we love to make fun of him for it.  It's mean but it sounds so stupid

I've always pronounced it May-lee, because that's what it sounds like the announcer says to me and that pronounciation just looks right with the spelling, imo.

And it is, without a doubt, Mar-ee-oh.  That's not even a question.

The word itself is pronounced May-lay. Dictionaries only list one pronunciation for the word.

The only ones I see pronouncing it the retarded way are like 10 years old.

By the look and sound of it, half of the point of this thread is how people choose to pronounce it, not how it is supposed to be pronounced.  No need to hate and jump to conclusions, people. :-\

I don't necessarily think it's a wrong pronunciation; just the American pronunciation.  Then again, I haven't really played very many Metroid games so I wouldn't know :'D  I just know that the Japanese pronunciation is "Samasu", or "Sah-mah-sue".  Sorta like how Lucas is "Ryuka" or "Ryoo-kah" in Japanese, yet we pronounce it as "Loo-kihs" by default.
