In the classic update they say the coins are used for something. I think they will be used to slot machine trophies like in SSBM :)
your thoughts?

Using that gum ball machine for example wouldn't be shopping. It's all Random. :P
I think the coins are for trophys as well :)
Maybe they can be used in wifi :O
hmmmmmmm...........trophy machine or something to buy a very important thing that can only be unlocked by these.
I hope there is a shop mode.
Where you can buy new items, trophies, new alt. costumes, etc.
Don't forget the characters!
OMG! Certain amount of coins= AWESOME character!
It's either that, or coins can get Trophies, stickers and CD's!

A what style trade?
And this is the exact quote people...
No, no. You earn and save these up little by little as you play. And supposedly you can use them somewhere. But no—you don't use them to shop.
I hope its something different than what was in SSBM. Probably for buying cds, trophies, or stickers.
It's probably gonna be used to get random trophies or stickers, like in SSBM.
Maybe something involving Subspace Emissary.
"And...
There's a method for powering yourself up as needed to do battle with the Subspace Army—a method that has not been seen before.
I'll explain this in great detail another time." -SSE Team Update
That, or there's an arcade with NES games or something similar that you pay for with coins. But that may or may not count as shopping.
Mabye getting 100,000 coins gets you Tom nook :P
You can use them for tropheys too.

*uses Dedede until that* D:
My first guess would be new costumes, music, trophies, etc., but it DID say no shopping... Problem is, what else would you use coins for? not likely for 1-Ups, but it is classic mode, so that may be the deal.
Hm... reminds me... they COULD be used for stickers in one way or another.

But it looks like you get like 300 for clearing one fight. I'm guessing what Starwind said. I think it may just be a vending machine where you can choose the type of item/costume/character but it's random. ;D
well I doubt it would be 100coins per 1-Up like normal, more like 100,000 or 500,000
Id like to mention the fact that there may vey well be a shop. Why? Because Sakurai said the coins weren't used for shopping! What about yen?bells?rupees? All of those are more than feesible! Just a thought, I mean, why would he bring it up!
You know what, looking at it, I think he was just trying to be funny.

yeah, I sensed a bit of sarcasm in that. Although sarcasm is hard to tell from a cpu screen... :/
