As if Sony couldn't have been less obvious about where the 'inspiration' came from, particularly that D-Pad in the second pic.

Yeah, I think I like this one.

The first one looks like a Sega controller.
Yeah and #2 looks like the SNES controller a little...

More of a N64 controller without the center prong.

If you didn't realize, even the final production controller is obviously a SNES controller with an extra set of shoulder buttons and two handles.

Was the first one for the Nintendo Playstation CD add-on?

I doubt Nintendo would allow Sony to have their name emblazoned for everyone to see.
Judging from Huelen's pic, it's extremely soon after Nintendo said "lol bai", and headed to Phillips.

I think the design works better with handles, although that D-pad looks God awful.

I don't think anyone would buy a controller that uncomfortable looking.

The PSX controller, as a whole, and so many other controllers at the time, was largely influenced by the SNES controller.

And relax, it could be this ungodly beast.

Atari 5200 Trackball controller. On the right with the yellow.
So darn huge, think of a NES, but it's actually BIGGER than a freaking NES.

The system itself was even worse in terms of largeness.
