Well, after pouring through old documents, they found the answer. There is a sea cow off the northern coast of Australia called a dudong. Apparently, these sea creatures have a slit, a clit, and numerous nerve endings in that area. Old days sailers used these for pleasure. Those aussie sailers weren't seeing mermaids, they were seeing dudongs.
