In reality it's a perfectly valid form of literature.  The Japanese love it-- and why not?  Porn is legitimate entertainment, and I applaud how much more enlightened their culture is when it comes to spanking material.  As if people in the U.S. are so horrified by the notion that people beat their meat and like looking at nudie pictures.  They don't go waving it around, but if you want it, you buy it and go home for a rousing evening of self-abuse.

A lot of hentai is just adult entertainment in the form of mature comics.  It's a way to see the kind of sex you don't (or can't) normally see in regular cinema.  And I'm not just talking about tentacle porn.  Straight up homosexual porn, fetishist porn, or even illegal types like rape, underage, or animal are arguably much more acceptable in an animated format.  If someone's got that particular itch, I'd much rather it be scratched with a cartoon than subjecting actual people to it in front of a camera.
