It appears someone is new to the world of ultra-portable PCs.

Most UMPC's have ethernet and multiple USB ports. And there's no reason for PATA.
Uh no, most of them rely on wireless networking.  I do wish it had more USB ports and a SS hdd though, you are right.

Most I've seen have both.

Do you even know what PATA is? I'm not talking about a Solid State Flash Drive (which the high-end one has), I'm talking about Parallel ATA, as opposed to the much faster Serial ATA.

I know, but Solid State owns them both.

Yes, but don't you think it's just a little bit bullpoopish that it uses PATA?

Yes yes, of course!  I agree with you 100% on that!  I just think that for the money you are paying for that, they should at least include a Solid State instead of a PATA OR SATA.

Lotos

I'd break that easily.

Um, guys, I think you're missing the point here. This is not a gaming machine or even an everyday use machine for people like you. The target market for this is super-businessmen, tech geeks, and people who otherwise are extremely mobile/are obsessed with small form factor.

Personally I'm fine with the thickness of my MacBook Pro, which looks hefty in comparison, and really I think I'd be paranoid about snapping that thing in half or something.

Obviously, however, the MacBook Air would be completely unsuited for myself on numerous accounts... small screen (relative to my MBP), small hard drive (also relatively), lack of I/O. But again, it's not meant to be an extreme media machine/gaming machine like my MBP is.

I wouldn't really care about the lack of an optical drive, as I almost never use mine. Importing CD's every now and then, but I mostly buy digitally now anyway. Also, please be aware of the Remote Disc software that comes with the Air. And again, this thing is meant to be ultraportable and still a good computer, not a sit-on-your-desk replacement for the old laptop.

I'd die with a screen that small.

Why does everything have to be smaller and smaller? Because it can be?

We know. But it's bullpoopish that it has a PATA drive (which is horribly slow compared to SATA) and no Ethernet when they could have easily put it on.

So where would I use this over a Macbook/Macbook Pro if it isn't at my desk?

On a plane, in a taxi, in a hotel, in a meeting, etc. Like a I keep saying, their target market for this is the world-class super traveler who would actually want an ultra thin/light laptop and wouldn't care that much about tech specs.

Watch it sell; you know it's not going to be a failure.

I never said it was going to be a failure, but the Macbook fits all those.

you've got to admit this is a pretty awesome machine none the less.

Because and only because it's less than 1 inch big, right?
No, the specs on it and it's size/weight are what's amazing.
my piece of poop desktop has the same specs. Go for a cheaper windows OS computer with better specs, the thinness of it means crappier parts. Oh, and I like macs I just hate their performance. Yeah, I would rather go with a macbook or a uber-pimped out pc laptop.

Also, WHAT THE HELL DIFFERENCE DOES LESS THEN AN INCH OF THICKNESS MAKE ANYWAYS?
