NSIDER ENGLISH CLASS

A man walks up to a wall littered with graffiti. On the wall, a message is spray-painted on. It says "Iliterasy Sux."

The man shakes his head and says, "Well, it is the thought that counts."

- A brief description on a Non Sequitur comic

So, do you think illiteracy sucks? Well, in all that is fair, I do too. It annoys the crap out of me, and makes me want to hack into your account just to fix it.
No, I would never do that, heck, I don't even know how. But, please for all of our sakes and sanity, use proper grammar.

Did you promise? Good, and even if you didn't, well you're going to. Now!

All-right, now let's get the ball rolling.

Here's how this topic works. I'm going to bring up a lesson of the day, to teach all of you how it is properly said or typed... whatever. That's basically about it. You can PM me if you want to suggest a lesson of the day to me, I promise you, I'll probably do it.

So, here's the lesson of the day!

LESSON OF THE DAY

RANTS (a.k.a. essays)

So, you're angry at possibly every single person who is logged on today. Why? They're doing the exact thing that you don't want them to do. How do you tell them not to do it? You have to rant about it!

So, what makes a good rant? A good rant, like an essay, has a beginning, middle, and end. But, it is slightly different from an essay if you do it correctly.

Let's begin. What is the thing that is annoying you? Well, what annoys me the most is "txt tlk," so let's use that as our topic for now.

Now, let's write. Here's your first paragraph.

Txt tlk is endangering proper grammar and the ability to communicate with non-texting people as we know it. Not everybody has the ability to understand, "OMG, NO WAI!!!1!11!!11!! I CNT BLVE U WLD SY THT!" I bet you didn't understand that at all now, did you? So, why do you do it online? I bet you don't speak like that in real life, do you? How about to your mother? Text talk should be banned from the online community, and stopped at once.

Now, see how I put a little bit of angst into that? Rants are usually like that, angst, anger, and getting your point across.

Now, your next paragraphs should be numerated depending on what point you're trying to make.

1. Txt tlk is not easy to comprehend.

There's your point, but you need something to add to it. Write a paragraph on it. Remember to add in angst and anger, but get your point across as well. Don't get too wrapped up in your emotions.

So, once you've done that, you can make another point and paragraph. Keep doing this pattern until you think that all your points have been made. Then you should end with a conclusion that restates all of your points, and calmly or angrily ends the discussion.

Replies should flood in immediately afterwards, and most of them will, hopefully, agree with you.

Mmm, irony!  I think your wall of text will fail to interest people that have bad grammar.  They're probably aware of it and don't care.  If you want everyone to type coherently, you have to make them care first.  Just knowing how doesn't mean people will care to do so.

Swing and a miss! ~_^

(the less than proper typing bothers me too, depending on the situation)

Yeah, I noticed that, then fixed it... oops... :-[ :-[ :-[ (really embarrassed now...)

Haha, sorry, I saw it and I just had to mess a little bit, no offense!  I edit my posts 25% of the time due to something like that, typing too fast, etc.

Point is, you noticed and took care of it right away.

But how to have other people act the same way?  I don't think that's entirely possible. :-\

Kudos for caring, just the same.  I think proper English is important.

Luckily, I always take it upon myself to use proper spelling and grammar on the Interbuttz, because I'm one of the few who do.

THEBIRD

lolz wutz grammer?

Yeah, sorry, but I didn't read the lesson because I think I'm quite educated in the rules of grammar. I think spelling correctly is muy importante and same with speaking english on an english forum.

Gah, I'm a hypocrite! ...Riiiight... Well, no one wants to learn anything online, so no one will probably read that, sadly. But people who type like... Like my first sentence should really try to lengthen their words once in a while. Speaking smartly is teh funniez!

No.:) I do not need the help ;) What I need is the time.

You spelled "since" as "sense" or "sence" in the last two or more threads you've tried using that word. @_@

So the guy can understand what's written on the wall? Then what's the point of mentioning this?

Next Lesson: Commonly Misspelled Words
So? Who spells those words correctly all of the time? Your English professor? Who cares? Not everyone is an English professor, nor is everyone a native English speaker. All we need to know is the parts of English that allow us to communicate with each other. How is it possible to study English in the way English professors do? Since language is a man-made creation, we can claim anything we want about the language.

Of course, every professor would have to agree, but even then, how many people are professors that study English? Sure, I could use some classes to help me with my presentation skills, but other then that, everyone (except some foreigners or people with hearing disorders) can understand me just fine.

Says you; I, among other people, can (and should) be able to understand that just fine.

I find "txt tlk" as a way of training your brain to augment English and not for the better.

You play what you practice, and if what you do is type poorly all the time on here (the internet), you'll find yourself having trouble when it comes to putting together something presentable.

Also, it just plain makes you look stupid or uneducated when you can't form proper English.

It creates an image about yourself, and I care to be taken seriously and be respected for my opinions.  I take pride in such things.  Typing properly is a priority of mine when making a point.
