If you want to say that, then ROB would have originated from Mario Kart DS. After he's in one game, it's "legit".
I wasn't on the internet that long ago, did people think this same thing for Mr. Game and Watch in Melee?

no, because mr game and watch was actually a video game character to begin with, and game & watch started nintendo off.

I'm mad that ROB is in because it was nintendo's first way of scamming people out of their money. I see no reason to celebrate that, even though it worked.
