I have a beaten up pair too; there's a hole in the left side and oppositely on the right side in near the same spot.. as if something pierced one side and came out the other but my foot shows no sign of that happening luckily!  There's also at least one or two decent sized holes on the bottoms of each. >_>

I still have 'em even though they've only been mine for 1-2 years.  They are just too comfy, I can relate.
