Ten problems I have, from what I've seen, with Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

I have seen enough videos of the upcoming, soon-to-be-hit Super Smash Bros. Brawl to be convinced that the game will indeed turn out just as well here, if not better, than it did overseas in Japan.

Now, this doesn't mean much, because we already knew this. I think that, though, it would be beneficial to comment on a few problems I have with the game. What? I have problems with the game and I've never even experienced it yet? Sure.

These ten problems are based solely off of gameplay footage on YouTube (from various uploaders) as well as the Super Smash Bros. Dojo, and reflect solely my views. I bet many of you could counter any number of these, however I wish to express these only as I see them, and nothing more. Respond how you like, but this is what I see.

Note: I am waiting for Brawl, and I'm as excited as anybody else. However, no game is without problems, and while the game will receive, almost certainly, universal acclaim upon its release here, these are VERY minor issues I see.

These are in no particular order whatsoever.

1. Brawl SEEMS to be a bit slower than Melee.

I can't trust this entirely, however, from what I've SEEN, Brawl only looks a little slower than Melee, and from what I remember, Sakurai may have at one point or another stated that the pace was slowed down slightly to keep up with the increased amount of "stuff" going on, on-screen. This means simply that it will probably seem to go just as fast as Melee when you actually play it, possibly even faster (this is IGN's claim, that the game actually seems to have a faster-paced tempo than Melee). However, to me, from the videos I've seen, the gameplay seems a little slower, and the faster-paced Melee is more appealing to me.

2. The full pictures of the characters at the bottom need to go.

This is really annoying, to me. These pictures seem to go faded when you approach them, and then return to normal when you reach a distance away from them. This is not appealing to the eye at all, to see these going on an off all the time, and while it won't happen on many larger stages, on stages like Mushroomy Kingdom, where one is always close to the ground, this becomes a real problem and looks really annoying and distracting.

3. The footstool jump technique may be problematic.

Though I haven't seen it just yet, I went and replayed Melee matches and noticed I fell on top of my opponents quite a bit. This may or may not signify that jumping all over the place may accidentally result in some stupid footstool jumps you didn't mean to perform. Also, meteor smashes, the main purpose of this technique, were never really a huge factor in too many people's games that I had seen in Melee, so why improve upon something nobody cared about? There were only a few characters that did it well, anyways.

4. There's still friend codes.

Nobody really wants to say it just yet, or really care since there's wi-fi in the first place, but friend codes are still a part of this game and like it or not, you're still going to have to copy each and every one of those 12-digit codes in to the game to register your friends. Not like it's the end of the world, or anything, but we all know Nintendo can do better. Really, with the lack of voice chat and extremely limited in-game communication in the first place, (which I could make a complain in its own right, but won't) it wouldn't be that hard to tell friend codes to kick the bucket.

5. The names still appear over your character's heads in multiplayer matches.

One reason I always hated naming characters was that it just added an annoying box over my character's head, that just hovered there throughout the entire match. In a wi-fi match, I'd like to know who my opponents are, but seeing it the entire time doesn't appeal to me, visually. It only adds more clutter. It's even more of a problem now that your control systems are mapped to the names you have.

6. This announcer has to go.

He does one thing right, that I've noticed so far: He pronounces Samus's name correctly, something that the last announcer failed to do. "The winner is..." is far less dramatic than the well-recognized "This game's winner is..." and that's just sad that they had to come up with something new and change the well-known line. Also, his voice is kind of annoying. You think we'll get used to it?

7. "Analog" shielding is now gone.

This means, real simply, that you must always use your full shield. That large, weak shield that you could once use by lightly tapping down on the R/L keys is no longer an option due to the extended methods of control, and to be "fair" to those with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, as they have no way of using an analog shield. So, in short, your shield is always strong, and small. Kind of a lame omission, since you could use this weak shield to fend off projectiles in Melee, without wasting all of your shield.

8. There are now five universal "break the targets" stages rather than one for each character.

A matter of personal preference, maybe, but it seems like we no longer have to learn exactly what special move or ability the character in question must use, and it's probably been designed so that it's possible, yet challenging, for all characters. A daunting task, sure, but I'm willing to accept it if they did this well.

9. Some characters have ridiculously powerful recovery abilities.

Characters with wings, and those who have great jumping abilities, can now recover from nearly any hit unless it KO's them. They've likely been balanced out so that they're not quite powerhouses, of course, but honestly, if you get hit hard enough to the point where you shouldn't be able to come back, then you shouldn't come back. I've seen at least one character in a gameplay video somewhere come back after being knocked underneath the stage. Too much.

10. Snorlax is lame this time around.

What's this, KG? Yeah. I think Snorlax is smaller than he was last time, and falls a lot slower. Kind of reduces the "OH MY GOD, SNORLAX!!!" factor that was there last time. I wonder if he hits as hard, though.

So, there you have it. Ten, probably picky and stupid, complaints about Brawl. Could I come up with more if I had to? Yeah, but this is just to show that, in my OPINION, no game is perfect, including Brawl.

Comments welcome.

The only thing so far I've seen that I don't like is the load times.  Everything else is pretty minor to me compared to that.

Load times are a problem in a lot of games. Sadly it's something out of our control. The best we can do is have minigames or something to keep us busy while we wait. Sometimes that happens, sometimes not. Usually not, though, to allow for optimum loading time, I'd guess.

Silverhawk79

Picky picky picky. >:(
But I do agree with you on some points. The announcer is annoying this time around. Why not just use the same announcer from Melee? Some characters are definitely going to be annoying to kill, like Metaknight and Pit, and the name thing above the players also bothered me. Hopefully there's an option somewhere to turn that off.

Tupin

Sakurai made the game slower on purpose because there is a lot more happening.

I agree with everything else.

I know.  I'm a stickler for load times since I've not had that much of a problem for that with my games until this generation (well except for the PS2, but I didn't have many games for that though).

I hate load times.

It's unacceptable in this day and age to have load times over 15 seconds, no matter what you are loading.

Mabye you shouldn't buy it then.
I'm so sorry that Sakurai forgot to consult you when making the game.

My deepest apologies for not praising the game for everything it's worth and leaving out some blatantly obvious deficits in the game, just like 90% of the rest of the community has done.

If you have nothing nice to say, keep your mouth shut, thanks.

Then next time you see a thread about my complaints, or even think it might be about complaining, walk away before you make an ass out of yourself trying to sound like you know what you're talking about. You're not obligated to respond to my topics, nor are you obligated to act sarcastic and sound like a jerk.

Whats the point of making a thread about how you hate the game, no one really cares why you don't like it...
Its just a stupid way to whine.

I say these things just to make a conversation piece, just like the rest of the community is. I never said I disliked the game, in fact, I believe I actually said I'm as excited for it as everyone else. Don't put words in my mouth.

Also, I'm not whining, I'm pointing out blatantly obvious flaws that're just kind of there in the game, hoping someone might have something to say about it, whether they agree or disagree.

I didn't make this thread with the intent to get responses from people who want to bash me for a thread that actually makes for a good conversation. If you see it as whining, and dislike it, suck it up and leave rather than being a jerk and trying to make other people feel like they worked on a garbage topic that nobody wants to read. This just further reinforces that you're probably trying to be a jerk, so just stop.

If you have nothing nice to say, keep your mouth shut, thanks.

Fine, you want a comment?
I think the worst thing about Brawl is the fact that Diddy Kong is in. Eggplant Wizard would have been a much better character in my opinion.
