there is a small short cut right after the start/finish line.
to find it, race the fast staff ghost.

Yeah I've heard about that on NS2.
I just don't know what it is.

I need to see what the record holders do in their Time Trials, so I can do better in Time Trials.

There are actually a lot of "Mushroom Shortcuts" in MKWii. I call them that as you typically require a boost to make it useful or else you'll get slowed by the Grass/Offroad terrain.

Maple Treeway: Right side just after the Start/Finish Line. There is a hole in the fence.

Coconut Mall: After going up the 1st set of escalators, stay to the right on the top floor. The last store before the turn has it's doors open. When you exit the store, you can either go straight and jump down, or go right and follow past the escalators.

Daisy Circuit: After the Start/Finish, there is a part where there are all the quick 90 degree zig zag turns. On the last one, there is an open staircase with an item block at the top. Going through there will land you in the 1st of the 2 circles.

Koopa Cape: The best one is in the part where you're racing on the river. There is a giant red shell right before going to the underwater part. Use a mushroom to go RIGHT of the shell rather than following the water around it.

SNES Mario Circuit: Blatently obvious, there is a section of wall missing near the middle/end of the track. You can mushroom through instead of going around.

There are more, most of the tracks have one somewhere, I just can't remember them at the moment.

There's also the shortcut on Wario's Gold Mine where you follow the mine-carts and go to the left where you are going to leave the mine.

I use Toadette with the Magikruiser, which barely gives me resistance off-road. I can use the Maple Treeway and Daisy Circuit shortcuts without any hassle or mushrooms.

Also, no one can beat me on Shy Guy Beach... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
