the png and jpg look no different when I upload it.

the differences are minute. The point is that PNG loads faster and is more network-friendly, hence the appropriate acronym "Portable Network Graphic"

I find sig making a freedom of expression. I don't want to see cookie-cutter Photoshop-effects-and-brushes-type sigs all over the place.

Very true. I try to mix up what I do every time so it doesn't look like I'm doing the same thing. I have to really agree with what you said. Still, a tutorial would really help ;-;.
