Sand bending was merely a variation of Earth Bending cultivated in the desert. Also, water.

Basically. You can control elements to a degree. Water and Earth benders can control there elements around them. Fire benders can not only control fire but shot it out with there fists. Air benders can control air currents and fly with special gliders and even ride around on a ball of wind. Me if could could be a bender I would be water. I almost said earth but than I could not use it with out causing a lot of property damage so water.

well then,

air, because assuming i had the right precision, I'd be able to levitate objects toward myself, move fire with air, move earth with air, and move water with air, creating waves as well...
