Maybe it's just one of those things Nintendo threw on there, then several months later decided to trash the idea because everyone started using USB. Sort of like that button on the top of the classic controller, or the mic port on the DS.

What was that supposed to be for anyways?

There was supposed to be a clip on the back of the CC to clip the Wiimote onto the back, but they changed their minds. The button was for the clip.
