The DS port wasn't bad at all. When the DS was first released, it was the only game worth mentioning that was available for it at launch. What exactly "ruined" the game? The most common complaint is the lack of an analog stick, but I find the D-pad to work just fine. I don't need an analog stick to enjoy the game.
It wasn't bad, but that's the problem.

It wasn't bad.

That's all that can be said about it? Not great? That was the problem, the game was just average, and when compared to the greatness of 64, it doesn't cut it. Plus, it completely takes away the nostalgia factor, which isn't that big of a deal, but still...

It ruined the game, because looking at a DS for a couple of stars is nothing compared to staying up all night, in the light of a television screen, playing a kick ass game. The DS version never had the same charm.

Of course the DS version never had the same charm. Ports of games never have the same charm as the originals. In what ways, do you think Nintendo could have ported the game, and retained the same charm?

Also, nostalgia factor is another point I should have made. Nostalgia leads to biased statements. Not to mention, you can't really "take away" nostalgia. The way you remember the game is entirely up to you. Those memories are yours, and I don't quite see how a port of a game you adored should impact your opinion over said game.

Yes, I do believe that they were capable of porting it and retaining the same charm, may games/franchises have done it.

I know nostalgia leads to biased statements. I'll edit this later, I gotta do some stuff.

Underrated: Luigi's Mansion/ Sunshine.
I loved both games with a passion.

Overrated: Mario RPG

Super Mario Sunshine as well. I thought it was pretty fun. Luigi's mansion wasn't that bad either.

I absolutely love Luigi's Mansion; beat it 4 times.

Galaxy seems way too overrated for me. Wall-jumping takes no skill, nor does much of anything. It's kinda dumbed down difficulty-wise, for casuals, when Mario 64 was beatable when I was 9... Galaxy I've only gotten 35 stars cuz it's too boring.

And yeah, SMRPG I've tried playing. I really hate it. Dunno why, it just doesn't do it for me.
Become a Failbook fan: Victory Road :3

The Game Boy Pocket.
Put it in your back pocket.
Sit down and it breaks.

Underrated:Sunshine,and luigi's mansion.
Sunshine wasn't a bad game at all.In fact it took me longer to get 100% in it than galaxy and 64.
I haven't played luigi's mansion but a lot of people I know(and what iv'e read online)say it sucked. But from the gameplay I watched on youtube and playing some parts at my cousins house it's not realy a bad game. Not  nintendo's finest but not it's worst eaither.

Overrated:Super mario 64.
I liked it and it's one of my fav 64 games but it's not the best game ever.

Um....it doesn't have to be the best game ever. AND HAVE FREAKIN' GRAMMAR! [facepalm/]

Underrated: Definately Sunshine. While it may not be top notch like 64, SMS does not get the recognition it rightfully deserves.
Overrated: Mario Party. I mean seriously, 8 GAMES! I mean 64/Sunshine/Galaxy have similar plots overall, but not 8 games, all of which are based on the exact same thing.

How was Super Mario RPG over rated!?!?  I remember when that game came out, and when I got it for my SNES!  It was one of the funnest games I plaid on my old SNES.  Maybe for some kids now days, its not that great, but back in the day it was really fun!

Hmmm... an interesting thread and lot of interesting posts... It seems a lot of people are saying they think a game is overrated because apparently it's not the "best" Mario Game. But many of the games mentioned revolutionized Mario or did something unique and really in my oppinoin can't be called "overrated". To me, being overrated means people loved it and rave about it over and over yet didn't have much to it.

Mario 64: Mario's 1st steps in 3D and introduced the whole idea of collecting stars. While it's a bit unfortunite the idea of Star collecting has stuck with Mario for a few games now, I don't really see how this could be overrated. More like underrated since so many people here appear to dislike it.

Mario Sunshine/Luigi's Mansion: They broke the rules of saving a kidnapped princess and simply jumping over goombas to get to the goal to move onto the next stage. These both changed the game play of what is "supposed" to be Mario by adding things like being a Ghostbuster or the 1 man Street Sweeper. It seems a lot of people are arguing back and forth, so it seems like it's right where it should be.

Mario Galaxy: This won game of the year for a reason. While a lot of people here are claiming it's overrated. This game brought new dynamics to Mario we have not seen before and brought him back to a style we have not seen since Mario 64 by not having some sort of device from E. Gadd. With new Power-Ups, Psycho Gravity changes, levels being about both timing and strategy, and various puzzles, this game was different from the other all other Mario Games. And from all the complaints against it, sounds to me as though it's underrated here.

But now it is time for my oppinoin of which games are over and underrated.

Underrated: Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
-The 1st Mario game on the Gameboy to feature a save option and was a major step up from Super Mario Land. While using an Enhanced Mario 3 type of engine, the game resembles more of a Super Mario World for Gameboy. Also in this game was a 1-of-a-kind power-up we have not seen since; The Carrot which gave Mario the ability to rapid jump while the button was held, glide in the air, and jump higher than normal. Personally, I'd like to see this power-up make a return some day. Also, this game introduced a character who has been with us ever since, Wario.

Overrated: Japan Super Mario Bros 2 (US: Lost Levels)
-I hear a lot about people saying Super Mario Bros 2 in US was a completely different game, not even supposed to be Mario and blah blah blah. Then I hear some people say "OMG! 'Lost Levels' is so much more better as Mario 2 cause it's more like Mario". Well I would hope me of all people would already know these things. However, for those that haven't played the "REAL" Mario 2, I'll tell you that I'd take the US Mario 2 any time. The "Lost Levels" Mario 2 was basically Super Mario Bros with new levels and a poison mushroom that hurts you. While I know a lot of people don't think this game is the best, it didn't really do anything new. When comparing which Mario 2 was better, US or Japan's, I think US takes the cake by having new enemies and the ability to grab/throw things.

Overrated: Not sure, unless Brawl counts =|

Underrated: MARIO TENNIS AND MARIO GOLF, LIKE SERIOUSLY.
I have beat those games for both the GBA and the GCN so many times, if the Wii/DS version doesn't have WIFI  This is going to be one unhappy fanatic.  Yet online, I never see any mention of these games.  I personally loved them, although after playing them so much they tend to get easy...

By saying that, you proved part of its overratedness.
