While the format died in the USA in the early 90's, it was a major competitor to VHS in Japan for a long time, and was supported up until 2001. The last players are supposed to roll off the line later this year. Technically, LaserDisc outlived VHS, mainly due to a large cult following.

You ever know anyone that bought a LaserDisc player? I might buy one for historical purposes, just so I can say I own one.

It was a way to play movies, the discs were bigger than records and expensive to produce, but held higher quality than VHS and sacrificed no length in how long it could record, unlike Betamax.

There are some later players that are LaserDisc/DVD player combos.

I used them...maybe once in grade school.
The discs were Xbox hueg, and they sucked.

Yeah, my school district had them until 2004, and they only used them for like slideshow type things.

One of the teachers in my school still uses LaserDiscs for Global History class.  Those things are awesome.

It's too bad, really...imagine a blu-ray LaserDisc.  Now THAT would hold a lot of stuff.

they look like CD's the size of 12" vinyls.

These things were HUGE, but they could hold entire movies at quality that wouldn't be matched until the advent of DVD.
