QuoteReady to pay for your internet by the banner ad? Time Warner thinks you are.

Last week, Time Warner Cable announced Phase 2 of its new broadband pricing model, a tiered billing system that would charge internet users based on their monthly consumption. The company will soon begin metered pricing in four cities: Greensboro, NC; Austin and San Antonio, TX; and my current hometown, Rochester, NY.

Understandably, the news has sent the internet into a tizzy, which is why I thought it might be a good idea to break down the facts and put things into perspective.

But make no mistake: As gamers—many of us with families—we're the ones most affected by Time Warner's new pricing structure. This is a direct warning shot across our controllers and keyboards: a sign to wake up and smell the profiteering.

Crunching the Numbers

Here's how Time Warner's new pricing model works. Each household chooses one of five cap levels, ranging from 5 GB/month to 100 GB/month. Pricing resembles that of cell phone plans: Those who use the most broadband pay the highest amount and those who exceed their allotment are charged a fee—in this case, $1 for every excess GB.

The prices break down as follows:

5 GB: $29.99/month
10 GB: $39.99/month
20 GB: $49.99/month
40 GB: $54.90/ month
100 GB: No information yet

What do you think of this? TWC is a fairly large broadband provider, and I'm sure many of you will be affected by it. I think it's complete crap. I know for a fact that I probably use at least 20GB per month, but there's no way I'd ever pay $50 for internet. I have AT&T DSL, which is supposedly gearing up to do the same thing.
Thoughts? Will you be affected by it?

My grandma already pays $55.95 for internet, even though it's probably slower than what you have.

We're being ripped off.

Anyway, it sounds like crap.  Why is TWC suddenly trying to change their pricing schemes; are they about to go bankrupt or something?

I will not be affected because, last I checked, Time Warner has no control over Quest
meh

Macawmoses

I won't be affected for the time being - different rules in Canadia.

It is poop though. It's a service that they make a fortune on....they don't need more, now of all times.

I have Optimum Online and I don't think they're going to be doing something like this anytime soon.  I don't know for sure though...and at the college I'm going to be going to in the fall, Internet is included in my tuition I think so it wouldn't affect me.

However, this reminds us that the ISP's have a lot of power to screw us over.  We need people in charge there who understand the high-volume consumer and respect the openness of the current Internet.

Old news to me.

This is going to make playing online games very difficult, since sometimes we use 2 gigs a day here....

I'm going to have to find some new hobby then ;-;

Tupin

Ridiculous. Net neutrality bills NEED to be passed to prevent stuff like this from happening.

At least I don't have Time Warner, doesn't mean mine's the best though.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if Comcast decides to pull this poop.

Yesterday, sort of. I was on the verge of crying. Why? I got into an argument with a couple other people from #nsider and it got me really upset. I didn't really cry much though

Cablevision FTW

They did have caps on their bandwidth, but they're all gone now.
Tramps like us, baby we were born to die.

Nayrman

more greedy corporations wanting more money for services they charge way too much money for to begin with.

When will these company's be forced out by the general public that is too ill informed to do anything?
Whenever I get my own place and pay for my own internet, I know who I WONT be using. I mean seriously, bandwidth limits? What's next? Only a few selection of websites based on the packages you order? OH WAIT X_X;;

Mystic

Yay for Comcast. At least we get 250GB per month.
