We don't know if it'd turn out like how fiction speculates it'd affect the mind. Not only that, but our entire body would atrophy. Unless some fiction-based technology can reverse the effects of that, then people would die regardless of if HTA's claims are true or not.

Virtual Reality is just a lame concept, and the people that long for it are just too pathetic to deal with and enjoy reality. If you really want to escape reality, smoke some weed, do some LSD, or play WoW, because "true" virtual reality isn't possible right now, and won't be for an extremely long time, if at all.

I think video game technology has to take a giant step backwards. Fuck virtual reality, intercourse  motion control, intercourse  the third dimension. We need to go back to 32 bit sprites which looked fantastic and tasted good too. We need to de-volve into a casual generation where controllers had under 6 buttons and you didn't have to worry about intercourse ing lasers and hard drives that could stop working and buttintercourse  your gaming experience.

Re-release the Super Nintendo and start making new Metroid games, new Mario games, new Zelda games. They're all we ever needed anyway.

I don't consider Virtual Reality an escape from what is real. I consider it a chance to experience things that otherwise would not be possible. I wouldn't spend my life in there, mostly because I would never pay a monthly fee for it, I understand the difference between what is real and what is fake, and I probably wouldn't be very good at it. Let's say that we are able to keep our body under control, and they do come up with Virtual Reality, a system that works. Do you really think that everyone would get it? Most people between the ages of 30 and on probably wouldn't get it. They'd be too busy with their own lives. Not every kid is going to get it, their parents will understand the disadvantages and say 'no'. You can't say that once Virtual Reality is possible, everyone will want it and be using it. Some people won't have the money, others just don't like the idea, some are too busy, and too old or too young.

For the people that do get it, yes some will get consumed with it (just like people get consumed with pot, WoW, gambling, and any other addiction that ruins their life), others will embrace it and use it like any other game. Then their system will break, none of their friends go on anymore, or they'll just get bored of it and leave. I believe that once it is available, the human race will have been exposed to so much already that it won't be such a big leap. We'll have had other trial runs with lesser Virtual Realities, slowly evolved, and our society as a whole will have such an advancement of technology that Virtual Reality won't keep everyone stuck inside their homes, never to leave again. You can't just think of it as suddenly we have Virtual Reality "oh noez!". There are many different factors that go into it. And this is just how I believe it will play out.

As for Nintendo going back to its roots, why not do both? Nintendo needs to please all of its audiences, not by trying to mash them all together into one game, but by making different games and systems to tailor to the needs of the people. They should continue toying with the sensory idea, and also bring back some of the favorite oldies with revamped systems to play them on. They can't lose.

Next generation, I think that Nintendo will finally catch up in technology.  They'll have the disposable income to take a bit of a risk, and seeing the way the movie industry is (slowly) moving, I think they're going to head in the direction of 3-D picture.

How did virtual reality turn from a joke into an argument in this thread?

In my random predictions, I'll guess that:

• Nintendo will have loads of cash to blow into development from Wii's success
  
• They will attempt to maintain backwards compatibility with Wii games.
  
• Wiimotes will still work with the system as will some sort of newer controllers.
  
• Gamecube compatibility may be dropped.
  
• Something will be done to try to allow users to port their virtual console and WiiWare libraries from their Wii to the new system
  
• Graphics will be significantly improved, especially HD support considering that NTSC and PAL standards are becoming obsolete.
  
• Some sort of online changes. Perhaps one friend code that applies to all games played on your machine or support of newer wireless technologies.
  
• A significantly larger harddrive

Yeah all those actually seem like plausible things Nintendo would do next generation. To add on they might add more functionality and compatibility then they already have with the ds/dsi.

No, they do not. You do not know what a contradiction is, either that, or you do not know what the term "atrophy" means. I hate dissecting my own posts for people with horrible reading comprehension but I'll do that for you, just this once.

I said that we do not know how "true" virtual reality will affect the mind like how science fiction seems to believe it will. And the fact of the matter is, we don't. Regardless of that, our bodies if left immobile like in some pieces of fiction, WILL atrophy and wither away. As an example in case I haven't made it clear enough by now: people that are left in a vegative state, their bodies atrophy. Body=/=Mind.

They don't need to change much at all, look at the other systems, all they changed is graphics and stuff. Nintendo added motion control, they don't need to add much else, what I think should happen is have motion controls AND regular controls for games where motion controls don't really fit.

I actually had the thought that Nintendo might start supporting more active online soon.

What doesn't make sense is that with all the parental measures that are in place... its not like they can't just try and limit unrestricted access to those who are allowed by their parents.
