Apparently, We Only Use 10% Of Our Brain

I don't remember where I heard this, but I did. With this, it basically means that we are 90% smarter than we realize. Not sure if this is true, my grandma told me she saw it on TV, anyway, some kid got hit hard in the head with a baseball, now he knows the weather of any day, ask him what the weather was like 5 years ago and he can say what it was, and the weather for next week, he can also say, and he was apparently right every time. I also once saw a mentally challenged person sit down at a piano apparently for the first time and play great music.

So, if all of this is true, what do you think the human mind is capable of doing? How else can we awaken parts of our brain? Should we all get a baseball to hit us in the head 'till we find out?

EDIT: Even if it has been disproved (Kilroy), still answer the "if" question.

Myth has been disproven 9000+ times over. All these silly things that seem to be "common knowledge" are mostly old baseless studies that are easily disproven.

Source? I'd provide a source, but the show I saw was like 5 years ago, I didn't see the weather guy, and I can't link to my grandma. The topic title I've heard many times, but I don't remember where.

Like Tuppy said, we use a good chunk of our brain performing the varying functions. There is, in fact, a chunk of brain that will largely go unused, and you can live without certain parts. However, your brain is actively involved in various parts of thought. Conscious thought may only use 10%, but as a whole you're using a huge number. Keep in mind your chemoreceptors would (I assume) easily use 10% of your brain managing CO2 levels, managing other wastes, etc. Then there is music, which is going to be running rapidly through both hemispheres of the brain.

Child wise, I'd say it just triggered a certain set of events in his brain, and that's why he has the now photographic memory. I've heard sranger. Oh, and no I would not do any such thing to "enhance" my knowledge. It's foolish if you ask me. As for what we could do....destroy ourselves even faster!

Its not as if we can "awaken" our brains and have psychic abilities.
Its almost like DNA, for the total amount of DNA that has vital information in it is very small. The rest is just junk.

Same with our brain, I believe.
That's why you can have large chunks removed and still function normally.
