First concrete details about Project Needlemouse

Lo and behold that Sonic is the only playable character in the game. Between Secret Rings/Black Knight (well, you were never FORCED to play as anyone else), and Sonic Unleashed, Sega seems to finally be wising up that no one wants to play as anyone else but Sonic... at least for right now.

Oh and...

EEEEE! It's crabmeat! How I missed you old friend! (hopes for GRRRRRRounder to return as well. XD )

I was actually personally hoping this would take a kind of NSMBWii approach, as that could potentially have online as well, however this is the next best thing for me, still however skeptical.

This. If they can revive Sonic like Mega Man 9 or NSMB...then I'll be pleased. Go to the roots, find what made the series fun, and pass that on to a new generation of gamers.

Yeah, a NSMB Approach would be well appreciated here, as that's how I hope the rest of the game is approached.
Most of the woodland creatures before the 3D Games (emphasis on most) weren't actually that bad. Want to know why? They didn't have bloody horrible voice acting. They actually had continuous roles each game that made sense. They weren't copy and pasta's of previous characters with similar personalities - It's not just only having sonic as playable and having it a 2D Sidescroller that will help on It's own

Oh well; I'll just wait and see how this turns out. Maybe it will turn out similar to those, only one can hope.

Posted from earlier. New characters aren't bad, but sega has the worst way of executing them into the game these days. I mean, what the hell do most of the characters even do in most of the plots now? It's just altogether one big pile of bull. I think people just want them to die as well due to how horrible they've been in the newer games.

I wouldn't say that by any means. Looking at the Mario series, I see great places for Waluigi, King Boo, Rosalina, Toadsworth, etc. Yes, try to create new characters where you can to play parts (ie. Birdo/Tryclyde/Mouser/Wart as bosses)...but keep them within a realm where you can still control the main character(s) as they were intended.

The issue then arises from nostalgia. People don't like one time appearances. Yes, Knuckles and Tails change the gameplay dynamic. They are worthy additions in some sense. But the trend is - we need to see the core gameplay. Just like how I want to see Rosalina incorporated in the future, I also want to see Jet, Omega, etc. in the sonic series. However, Sega (like nintendo) needs to get back to the basics and re-evaluate their star before they can further the other characters and advance the side series.

I would say yes.
Get rid of the bullpoop characters from Sonic Heroes, even the story characters like Amy and Rouge.

However, keep Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Eggman, Metal Sonic.
The good characters.
