I don't see what's so great about it, I tried to get into it but found it fairly boring

The end of it is what makes it fun to watch.

So which episodes should I skip?
You shouldn't really skip any.  The beginning is slow, but it provides the character development to make the characters more interesting later when you find out more about them.  I toughed it out and thoroughly enjoyed the series.

I liked the first season, I've only watched the first episode of the second season so far though and it was good. And I enjoyed the light novel.

I actually really liked this series. But don't go looking for action. It is a very slow story.

While it's not horrible, it's not that good either.
I personally hate the character (if any) of Haruhi. I find her insanely annoying, whiny, ninnyy, needs a good pimp slap, etc. Everyone else I am okay with...mostly. No one annoys me as much as Haruhi does, and that alone made me dislike the series.
Methinks this series needs a "Haruhi minus Haruhi" rendition for this to be enjoyable.

She's supposed to be an obnoxious sort of character.  It adds to the humor of what is revealed about her.  Also, don't ask me about the second season, as I've felt no need to touch it.  I was content with the end of the first season and still don't understand why a second season was made other than to act as a fan service.  To me it was like making further episodes of FLCL.  Despite there being some questions you may have still had at the end of the series, and a bit of a what the intercourse  factor, that's how it should be.  They're questions you answer, and adding more to the series after that seems to ruin that effect to me.

Yeah, I thought it was okay until the ending hit. Then I was like THIS IS AWESOME

Funny...I don't find loud obnoxious teenage girls who get everything they want amusing.
Don't even touch the second season... ENDLESS EIGHT, ENDLESS EIGHT......ENDLESS EIGHT!

The second season was made because season 1 didn't cover all of the source material. It's a series of light novels and the first season only took bits and pieces of all of them.

Skip about half of season 2
I forget the exact numbers, but skip from the first episode of Endless Eight to the last, watching both of those two but nothing in between. Saves you three hours (6 episodes) of the same things repeating. Although the video numbering of S2 alone is often not sequential, that's skipping I believe the 3rd through 8th episodes (endless eight is in the 2nd-9th episodes)

Most people hate S2 because of Endless Eight, but if you skip all of those six episodes, it's a really nice (although short) season.

what was the point of endless eight?

to troll the fanbase.

Actually it was a chapter in one of the books where they get stuck in a recursion in time (where what? We're stuck in a recursion in time! *Kyon-kun...denwah?*), and it lasted for eight cycles until they finished it. So what do they do? THEY DO IT FOR EIGHT EPISODES OF THE SAME EXACT THING!
Biggest waste of time and animation EVER

Magnum

Endless Eight. I remember when people were freaking out after the second one, saying *Is This Going To Be 8 Episodes?* I was one of them. I'm going to make Endless Eight partially viewable.
